Color Uncoordinated

My friend is very anal and orderly, so he likes to plan things out in advance for even the easiest of tasks. So before we competed he showed me this and said, “lovely connections, aren’t they?”

He then said, “See how organized I made it?” To which I then responded “Hmmm…very touching, of course, but this isn’t even a legal setup…plus I’d say one of those colors is technically wrong.”

What did he show me and why did I say that?
