Far Side of The Moon
by Kevin J. Lin
Have you ever noticed that whenever the moon is visible, whatever portion is showing looks the same? No matter what phase the moon is in, or where on Earth you stand, you never see the surface of the far side (the side showing in the image to the right).
This would seem to suggest that the Moon rotates about its own axis with a timing just coinciding with its trip about the Earth, allowing one face to always be directed toward us.
Now it certainly isn't the case that the same side of the Earth always faces the moon, or that the same side of the Earth always faces the sun. So is it just a coincidence that we always see the same side of the moon, or is there another explanation?
