The Hex

Wandering through the Grey Labyrinth you come upon a locked door. Curious, you peer through the key hole and see the strange hexagonal image shown above. 

The texture of the hex convinces you that what you are seeing is a real object, not a painting or drawing. The Labyrinth has been known to bend minds, but is it warping space as well? Or perhaps there is a less exotic explanation. What in the world could you be seeing?
