After filling in a few clues, I think I know why it's called "Binary Digits": {I've only used '1', '2', '4', and '8' so far}. ...Um, is the "solve math" line a cell short? I want to say it should read {'calcul8'}... - ZM_________________Darkness lessons learned/Avenging golden tresses/Yellow flower blooms - "(dedicated to Millia Rage)", original haiku

Ooh! I think you're right.

I'm also stuck on "from the crowd", and I still don't like our answers for "original making" (wrong tense or part of speech) and "solve math" (assumes the puzzle is in error). - ZM

I'm guessing there's still at least one more step and possibly more. Why are the clues in that order? And why the staggered grid? And what's the significance of the text below the box?

One possibility would be to read vertically but I can't see anything significant yet ...

Posted: Wed Nov 23, 2005 6:31 pm    Post subject: 13 Could "renounce anger" be "4give"? Also, "astonishing" is probably "1derful," since "wonderous" would be misspelled (wondrous). Here are a couple things I tried that I don't think helped: I wanted to read a message vertically through the clues, so I was thinking about how to line them up. I tried sliding the clues left and right so that the digit in each clue would fall in the "correct" column. That doesn't seem very promising, mainly because of "every1." I thought about starting each clue in the "correct" column, but "every1" causes me problems again, because it's not at least 8 characters long.

Looking at my list, "solve math" could be estim8 "from the crowd" could be any1 I had a couple others that differed from 3iff's list, but they've been since mentioned by other posters I see. Also...the only numbers used are 1,2,4,8 which are the the binaries 1,10,100,1000.

Nice! I think so.

And then e wrote: Also, "astonishing" is probably "1derful," since "wonderous" would be misspelled (wondrous).

Oh - I had that already; I didn't even notice 3iff had something different.

Here's the "best guess" grid at the moment... hmm, the "code" tag isn't playing nice with other tags. So here's a plain ol' list instead:
{ EDUC8
2NIGHT
CRE8
ESTIM8
2GETHER
ANY1
EVERY1
1DERLAND
4EVER
2TOR
SEPAR8
4TITUDE
1DERFUL
4GIVE
2SDAY
PERCHLOR8
}

I still don't like some of these, but at least the whole grid is full.

I'm guessing the rows have been prealigned vertically as they have for a reason, but what I'm not certain of is {whether the rows themselves are in the right order}. I'm out of time for now, but maybe someone can try {ordering the answers by how they'd be alphabetized by a computer, taking the digits into account, and keeping their horizontal position in the process}... - ZM

Posted: Thu Nov 24, 2005 8:24 am    Post subject: 19 Nice work every1 We seem to have a reasonable word list that most are happy with (famous last words) With the odd grid alignment, I was assuming the two vertical columns of 10 and 8 letters might spell another word or two, but they don't. Is there now another step involving the binary equivalent of the embedded numbers? I've tried taking the character of each word where a binary 1 would appear...ie D of EDUC8, H of 2NIGHT etc...as counting from the right (normal) or even trying from the left but I seem to get an odd assortment of letters that don't lend themselves to acceptable anagrams. Of course, we might be finished on this puzzle???

Posted: Thu Nov 24, 2005 3:50 pm    Post subject: 21 The suggested answers so far contain four words with the digit 1, four words with the digit 2, three words with a 4 and five with an 8. If one of the 8s was changed to a 4, it would make a more satisfying puzzle. I think that cre8 for "original making" seems a bit weak ... might it be something with a 4 in it? 4mat would fit (but still seems weak), giving dime instead of dire as one of the vertical words ... any other possibilities?

Posted: Fri Nov 25, 2005 1:25 pm    Post subject: 24 Well... it's very tenuous, but each of the four words could be associated with "bowl" ... fish-bowl, rose-bowl, dime-bowl, hard-bowl (had to google for that last one ... see link). I still think I'm missing something ... what's that "How do you work?" stuff all about?

Posted: Sat Nov 26, 2005 11:09 pm    Post subject: 25 I feel like 3iff's idea about indexing into the word based on the binary equivalent of the number feels like the right way to go, although I wouldn't count the digit itself when doing so (eg, for EDUC8, 8=1000 in binary, the 1 in 1000 is four spots in, so take the fourth letter in from the right = E. EVERY1 would equal Y). Also, all of the digits are either at the beginning or end of words, so maybe you count in from either the beginning or end of each word depending on where the digit is. Then the staggering might tell us the order in which to take the letters, eg start from the leftmost and work right. All sounds good, except I can't get anything but gibberish. Also it would mean that "CRE8" is definitely wrong, since you (obviously) can't go in four letters. w-

Posted: Mon Nov 28, 2005 9:10 am    Post subject: 27 Yeah, I just get gibberish too... Regarding the ordering of words, counting from left to right, each word containing a specific number is offset slightly, so that there is a definitive order for each group (except the 8 group!) So, we have 1derland every1 1derful any1 and so on... the only problem is that educ8 and perchlor8 both start in the same position. Secondly, apart from getting the word EVEN fron the 1s group (see above), I can't make anything from the rest of the groups...even if offsetting the letters +/- 1.

I think we need to do something else with dime(?), hard, rose, fish ...or it's a VERY clever attempt to distract us. Could they be clues to another set of words containing similar digits? Eg Fish could be 2na or sk8 ...

Posted: Mon Nov 28, 2005 11:54 am    Post subject: 29 Newish Boy. devious...but nice spot... Those 4 words are (probably) there but are fairly meaningless in themselves. Perhaps they do link to other words as you suggest. One problem with some of these puzzles is that it's hard to know when we reach the end...

Posted: Tue Nov 29, 2005 9:53 am    Post subject: 33 Well done Jangler ... I think that could be it! Not quite there yet, but the answer to the question in the text "How do you work?" could be something like "Damn hard" or "Darn hard" or even "Durn hard" - I can't quite get that first word .... and the other two words are indeed a red herring!! As far as that first word goes, the possibilities seem to be: First letter: D Educ8 seems fairly clear, though there could be alternatives. Second letter: I I'd like this to be an A or a U, but I have no suggested alternatives to 2night. Third Letter: R and M have both been suggested ... there may well be other alternatives ... Fourth letter: E and N are both possible (from Evalu8 or Numer8) ... there'll be other possibilities for this too.
