So, Bill Clinton was the first black president, and Barack Obama is the first gay president. It makes me wonder: when we actually do have a gay president, what will he be dubbed?

I think I'll be employing that last one. Thankfully, my wife is quite good at suppressing the craziness of that week, but there are other women in our social group who well-fit that designation.

Wow, you must be pretty close with your friends to know when they're all menstruating.

Oh. I didn't realise that it was distinguishable from our other bad moods, as I can't say I've ever noticed around my close female friends. Could you elaborate, perhaps, on how to tell if a woman is menstruating rather than just grumpy? I'd love to know what the tell-tale signs are - maybe someday I can learn to "suppress" things as well as your wife. Like, for instance, my distaste for having my feelings of anger trivialised due to my gender? I sometimes get all hysterical about that. Silly little me. Tee hee.

Is that different from a husband's feelings of anger, which he has to suppress because he knows that expressing them will lead to an argument which will only end when he apologizes?

Zag, I don't know what "that" in your post refers to, so I'm not sure how to take it. Do you mean "distaste for having feelings trivialised due to gender"? I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here because I'm well aware that you are a progressive, liberal-minded guy, so I'm assuming that you're not leaning on the stereotype that wives are incapable of apologising or resolving conflict in their marriages, and using that as some kind of "see? Men have it bad too!" type of sentiment. Unfortunately I'm not really sure what the actual intended sentiment is.

In any case, "a husband's feelings of anger, which he has to suppress because he knows that expressing them will lead to an argument which will only end when he apologizes" are no different from "a wife's feelings of anger, which she has to suppress because she knows that expressing them will lead to an argument which will only end when she apologizes" - though in both cases the couple should work on their communication and conflict resolution skills - but both are very different from "chalking up a female acquaintance's bad mood to her being on the rag", which is pretty horrifically sexist and insulting.

I have not given out one of these in years. There is a new winner of the Moron of the Moment award. I give these out when someone says a statement so dumb, so blindly, jaw-droopingly idiotic, that there is no other rational response to it. There is no time frame for the award, this is not "worst of the year" or anything like that, it is just whenever someone else manages to say something that tops all previous winners.

And we have a real doozy this time:

Charles Carreon wrote:
It might not have seemed very dehumanizing when Walt Disney made Japanese people look silly with buck teeth and big glasses who could not pronounce their 'R's or their 'L's. But it was dehumanizing, and the purpose was to direct evil intentions against them, which ultimately resulted in the only nuclear holocaust that ever occurred in the history of humanity. I don't think Truman would have ever done that if we hadn't so dehumanized the enemy.

Translation: "America dropped the nuclear bombs on Japan becuase Walt Disney made fun of them."

What caused this particular outburst of insanity?

This response to his attempted extortion while using a law license as a shield..

Further reading available here: Part I. Part II, Part III, Part IV.

I really need to keep a close eye on this one.

To be fair, he might have a point if he is saying the american media and culture as a unit dehumanized Japanese (and germans) through propaganda and cartoons to the point where dropping a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima didn't seem as wrong (particularly to citizens).

However there are records of Truman working through the decision, and no where is it recorded that he felt the Japanese were less human or real than Americans - just far less obligated to help them. So he doesn't have a point - but I can at least see where he's coming from and it isn't the craziest thing.

How does one typically celebrate a "half-birthday" if they are to do so? Razz If it is half of a birthday, I guess special circumstances are drawn for the festivities to illustrate half the quality of the parallel quality of the birthday. Perhaps half a birthday cake. Musical legs. Halves of books and CDs and other items for assorted gifts, wrapped with a side of paper. Music abruptly stopped in the middle of each song. Silenced noisemakers. Birthday hats with the tops cut off. Party favor bags with a few coins, some loose thumbtacks and a festively colored rubber band. A clown who is still in college and needs more education. Already broken pinatas. And of course...pin the tail on the minotaur.

My son Morgan, who is 8 was asked what opportunities and challenges have in common. He answered, "choices."

It was so insightful for such a little guy. I was so proud and it left me thinking about what choices I make that bring me opportunities or challenges.
