No, seriously this time. I am not a Monkees fan in general, but I love that song way too much. Revenge most foul!

Another try at a sonnet. Inspired by a friend, but it quickly devolved to a subject of no one in particular. Nominally titled:

Expression

What can one say about thy fair beauty?
Why, one could not express this thought in word,
But in the faithful act of duty
For all other doth make it quite absurd.
If one desired to show thee love, what
Token wouldst thou take? Some do speak strongly
While others speak not strong enough. All but
The most temperamental do so wrongly.
It seems as though no act or word would be
Able to display the proper phrase or
Deed. Perhaps then it would be best for thee
To take me as I am: no less nor more.
The mind it does think grand thoughts of pleasure,
Though none that a word to ear could measure.

If Atlas Shrugged
By Paul Bishop - April 4, 2005

Like Atlas I try to bear the world
Unlike him, my shoulders bend and bow
My arms strain with the strength I do not have
Ultimately I will falter

Yet, I hold the world
A living, breathing orb
That perhaps knows not I bear
Its weight within my heart

For while my body will break and twist
While the sun burns and the snow freeze
It is love that holds the world aloft
As life flows and ebbs like tidal seas

What if I were to fall to my knees
And quake the world with fear
Cause a tsunami of indifference
Or an scorching hateful sear

Yet I carry it in my heart
And support that human call
If once Atlas ever shrugged
I'd bear the weight, for all

Sunset of the Heart
By Paul Bishop - April 4, 2005

I drove home into the sunset
Blinded by brilliance dancing in the skies
Red and orange glowed a fire
Burning a loneliness into my eyes

Once I had completed my trek
And retreated to my abode
I watched night blot out the light
Wishing I still was on the road

The long and lonely way to you
And at the end a flame
That brightly flaming love I have
Reciprocated once again

Holding you against all fear
Forging a path through the dying day
Feeling moonlight in your voice
And shining stars in your eyes

Love Me
Love You
Love Us
Love Two

Finally found my Plath book again, after years of it being lost in frog-knows-where. To celebrate:

Spinster
by Sylvia Plath

Now this particular girl
During a ceremonious April walk
With her latest suitor
Found herself, of a sudden, intolerably struck
By the birds' irregular babel
And the leaves' litter.

By this tumult afflicted, she
Observed her lover's gestures unbalance the air,
His gait stray uneven
Through a rank wilderness of fern and flower.
She judged petals in disarray,
The whole season, sloven.

How she longed for winter then!—
Scrupulously austere in its order
Of white and black
Ice and rock, each sentiment within border,
And heart's frosty discipline
Exact as a snowflake.

But here—a burgeoning
Unruly enough to pitch her five queenly wits
Into vulgar motley—
A treason not to be borne. Let idiots
Reel giddy in bedlam spring:
She withdrew neatly.

And round her house she set
Such a barricade of barb and check
Against mutinous weather
As no mere insurgent man could hope to break
With curse, fist, threat
Or love, either.

One of my favorites:

To The Whore Who Took My Poems
by Charles Bukowski

some say we should keep personal remorse from the
poem,
stay abstract, and there is some reason in this,
but jezus;
twelve poems gone and I don't keep carbons and you have
my
paintings too, my best ones; its stifling:
are you trying to crush me out like the rest of them?
why didn't you take my money? they usually do
from the sleeping drunken pants sick in the corner.
next time take my left arm or a fifty
but not my poems:
I'm not Shakespeare
but sometime simply
there won't be any more, abstract or otherwise;
there'll always be money and whores and drunkards
down to the last bomb,
but as God said,
crossing his legs,
I see where I have made plenty of poets
but not so very much
poetry.

"Hungry Like The Wolf" by Duran Duran

Dark in the city, night is a wire
Steam in the subway, earth is a fire
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
Woman you want me, give me a sign
And catch my breathing even closer behind
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do

In touch with the ground
I’m on the hunt I’m after you
Smell like I sound, I’m lost in a crowd
And I’m hungry like the wolf
Straddle the line, in discord and rhyme
I’m on the hunt I’m after you
Mouth is alive with juices like wine
And I’m hungry like the wolf

Stalked in the forest, too close to hide
I’ll be upon you by the moonlight side
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
High blood drumming on your skin it’s so tight
You feel my heat, I’m just a moment behind
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do

In touch with the ground
I’m on the hunt I’m after you
Scent and a sound, I’m lost and I’m found
And I’m hungry like the wolf
Strut on a line, it’s discord and rhyme
I howl and I whine I’m after you
Mouth is alive all running inside
And I’m hungry like the wolf

(hungry like the wolf
Hungry like the wolf
Hungry like the wolf)

Burning the ground I break from the crowd
I’m on the hunt I’m after you
I smell like I sound, I’m lost and I’m found
And I’m hungry like the wolf
Strut on a line, it’s discord and rhyme
I’m on the hunt I’m after you
Mouth is alive with juices like wine
And I’m hungry like the wolf

Burning the ground I break from the crowd
I’m on the hunt I’m after you
Scent and a sound, I’m lost and I’m found
And I’m hungry like the wolf

Strut on a line, it’s discord and rhyme
I howl and I whine I’m after you
Mouth is alive all running inside
And I’m hungry like the wolf..

Life Lessons

I was twenty-five years old
volunteering in a hospital
to keep busy
or to apologize for things I hadn’t really done
when I was attending to an old man sitting alone melancholy in his bed.
Strangely unprovoked, he told me his wife was a whore
and his children were phonies.
I gave no reply.

Fifteen minutes later
his family arrived while I was there
and I watched his grown children and saw they were phonies
and then I looked at his wife
and wondered.

you are the stillness in my heart

you are the dancing in my soul

you are the strength of my right arm

you are the lightning in my mind
(of sparks that leap from midnight fire)

you're every breath I draw
every song I ever knew
the taste of raspberries and honey
only you

If there's somethin' strange in your neighborhood
Who ya gonna call (ghostbusters)
If it's somethin' weird an it won't look good
Who ya gonna call (ghostbusters)

I ain't afraid a no ghost
I ain't afraid a no ghost
If you're seein' things runnin' thru your head
Who can you call (ghostbusters)
An' invisible man sleepin' in your bed
Oh who ya gonna call (ghostbusters)
I ain't afraid a no ghost
I ain't afraid a no ghost
Who ya gonna call (ghostbusters)
If you're all alone pick up the phone
An call (ghostbusters)

I ain't afraid a no ghost
I hear it likes the girls
I ain't afraid a no ghost
Who you gonna call (ghostbusters)
Mm…if you've had a dose
Of a freaky ghost baby
You better call ghostbusters
Bustin' makes me feel good
I ain't afraid a no ghosts

Don't get caught alone oh no…ghostbuster
When he comes through your door
Unless you've just got some more
I think you better call ghostbusters
Ooh... who you gonna call (ghostbusters)
Who you gonna call (ghostbusters)
Ah, I think you better call (ghostbusters)

I can't hear you…(ghostbusters)
Who you gonna call (ghostbusters)
Louder ghostbusters
Who you gonna call (ghostbusters)
Who you can call ghostbusters…

Just found this song recently and love the lyric.

Leader Of The Band Lyrics
By Dan Fogelberg

An only child alone and wild
A cabinet maker's son
His hands were meant for different work
And his heart was known to none --
He left his home and went his lone and solitary way
And he gave to me a gift I know
I never can repay

A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldn't wait
He earned his love through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand.

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.

My brothers' lives were different
For they heard another call
One went to Chicago
And the other to St. Paul
And I'm in Colorado
When I'm not in some hotel
Living out this life I've chose
And come to know so well.

(Instrumental)

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, papa, I don't think I
Said 'I love you' near enough --

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band.

Not my best work but one of my most recent ones:

Sitting in this empty room
No where to go from here
My heart explodes like a sonic boom
Nothing left in me but fear
Everything becomes a blur
Slowly falling down
Speech becomes a slur
All my tears they weigh a pound
Get up off this cold floor
Head swimmimh with thoughts
I fall against the door
As I realize all my faults
My love for you will never die
No matter how many angels fly

I love his crooked eyebrow, and her random wild curl.
I love the single smudge in my cat's face's fur.
But I want to be perfect.

I love the snags in my old rug.
I love the chip in my favorite mug.
But I want to be perfect.

I love the way my sweetie snores.
I love when my sister mixes up words.
But I want to be perfect.

I love hunting out typos in books that I read.
I love peeling paint, and gardens with weeds.
But I want to be perfect.

I love their quirks.
I hate my flaws.
I can't love myself and I'm clutching at straws.
I'm broken in so many ways.
And I want to be perfect.

On the futility of versification.

To herd same cats or catch a thought, or make
A metric sieve to save the hints of tunes,
A sad and doomed obsession! So I break
The sense, and to the sounds procrust my boons
Of contemplation; resonate the fake,
And glibly whore these figments 'gainst my runes.

this is who I am

The power of love is a curious thing
Make a one man weep, make another man sing
Change a hawk to a little white dove
More than a feeling thats the power of love

Tougher than diamonds, rich like cream
Stronger and harder than a bad girls dream
Make a bad one good make a wrong one right
Power of love that keeps you home at night

You dont need money, dont take fame
Dont need no credit card to ride this train
Its strong and its sudden and its cruel sometimes
But it might just save your life
Thats the power of love
Thats the power of love

First time you feel it, it might make you sad
Next time you feel it it might make you mad
But youll be glad baby when youve found
Thats the power makes the world goround

And it dont take money, dont take fame
Dont need no credit card to ride this train
Its strong and its sudden it can be cruel sometimes
But it might just save your life

They say that all in love is fair
Yeah, but you dont care
But you know what to do
When it gets hold of you
And with a little help from above
You feel the power of love
You feel the power of love
Can you feel it ?
Hmmm

It dont take money and it dont take fame
Dont need no credit card to ride this train
Tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel
You won't feel nothin till you feel
You feel the power, just the power of love
Thats the power, thats the power of love
You feel the power of love
You feel the power of love
Feel the power of love

I Cannot Go To School Today!

by Shel Silverstein

"I cannot go to school today"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.

My mouth is wet, my throat is dry.
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox.

And there's one more - that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut, my eyes are blue,
It might be the instamatic flu.

I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke.
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button's caving in.

My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My toes are cold, my toes are numb,
I have a sliver in my thumb.

My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.

My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There's a hole inside my ear.

I have a hangnail, and my heart is ...
What? What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is .............. Saturday?

G'bye, I'm going out to play!"

Yup, I love my poetry. I was doing some homework and suddenly I write that bit.

Imagine there's no bumpers
It's easy if you try
No floor below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the tables
Being ours tonight

Imagine there's no credits
That you can't lose a ball
Nothing to drink or eat for
and no space cadet too
Imagine all the tables
Being free tonight

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine there's no themes
I'm sure that you can
No need for drinking or eating
The table of man
Imagine all the tables
Being ours tonight

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Maybe my connection
Is tired of taking chances

Yeah, there's a storm on the loose
Sirens in my head
Wrapped up in silence
All circuits are dead
Cannot decode
My whole life spins into a frenzy

Help, I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone
Place is a madhouse
Feels like being cloned
My beacon has moved
Under moon and star
Where am I to go now that I've gone too far

Help, I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone
Place is a madhouse
Feels like being cloned
My beacon has moved
Under moon and star
Where am I to go now that I've gone too far
You will come to know
When the bullet hits the bone
You will come to know
When the bullet hits the bone

I'm fallin' down a spiral
Destination unknown
Double crossed messenger
All alone
Can't get no connection
Can't get through where are you?

Well the night weighs heavy
On his guilty mind
This far from
The borderline
When the hitman comes
He knows damn well he has been cheated

And he says:
Help, I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone
Place is a madhouse
Feels like being cloned
My beacon has moved
Under moon and star
Where am I to go now that I've gone too far

PIGS

It wasn’t education that got us where we are
Most of our adolescence was spent in front of a bar
We are sorely lacking when it comes to intellect.
That’s why we are known as Guys Who Are Politically Incorrect.

We are lewd and we are crude; our humor is the basest.
Polak jokes are fine with us – you might even say we’re racist.
Anyone with any class views us rather critically.
And knows that we’re the Guys Who Are Incorrect Politically.

We have the brawn (and brains) of Tyrannosaurus Rex
And to us women are still just great objects of sex.
The nineties are about honesty, but we still thrive on lies.
We are proud to say we are the Politically Incorrect Guys.

"Saved By The Bell"

When I wake up in the morning
And the alarm lets out a warning
I don't think I'll ever make it on time
By the time I got my books and give myself a look
I'm at the corner just in time to see the bus fly by

It's alright 'cause I'm saved by the bell

If the teacher pops a test I know I'm in a mess
And my dog ate all my homework last night
Riding low in my chair, she won't know that I'm there
If I can hand it in tomorrow it'll be alright

It's alright 'cause I'm saved by the bell

He was a man
Who taught him very strong
He killed the man
Who he must long
He was the loneliest fool that I ever saw
His eyes were obscene
Smoke from the scene
Why can’t you leave it behind
You are very blind

They say someday
You will be free
But you will never
Will never leave it behind
Someday you will be free but you will never leave it behind

These eyes will be watching you
You can’t hide, no
Flashlights, she walks into them
Why is she there again?

I like to jump, I like to fall, I like to smash into the wall, I like to run, I like to hide, I like to take cover from the fight

Man is the only animal that blushes or needs to
The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.
It usually takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.
Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed.
A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth
Is putting on its shoes.
Truth is more of a stranger than fiction.
Water, taken in moderation,
Cannot hurt anybody,

Oh, yes, this is very random. Funnily enough, all of it actually has a meaning, or overall idea (it did not involve random.org).

This is where I ran to

Marble rain drops pelt the ground

Silence, an enormous cavity

The freefall, free for all, free to fall

Sequined stars, glancing shadows

Pummel like hard blows

Squealing pain, evisceration

Bloody, bleeding, bloodstained

Blurring statues on each road

Each painted face stoic

The icy-hot searing wind

Ripping, tearing, whipping

No enchantment, not a wonder

Found only, the forgotten

Still unremembered, lonesome

Heart break, starving, heart ache

Sometimes they do not make sense.
Refrigerators.

This poem has been stuck in my head all day. Half Frown
Meat Loaf wrote:
The sirens are screaming and the fires are howling
Way down in the valley tonight
There's a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye
And a blade shining oh so bright
There's evil in the air and there's thunder in the sky
And a killers on the bloodshot streets
Oh and down in the tunnel where the deadly are rising
Oh I swear I saw a young boy
Down in the gutter
He was starting to foam in the heat

Oh Baby, you're the only thing in this whole world
That's pure and good and right
And wherever you are and wherever you go
There's always gonna be some light
But I gotta get out
I gotta break it out now
Before the final crack of dawn
So we gotta make the most of our one night together
When it's over you know
We'll both be so alone

Like a bat out of hell
I'll be gone when the morning comes
When the night is over
Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone gone gone
Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes
But when the day is done
And the sun goes down
And moonlight's shining through
Then like a sinner before the gates of heaven
I'll come crawling on back to you

I'm gonna hit the highway like a battering ram
On a silver black phantom bike
When the metal is hot and the engine is hungry
And we're all about to see the light
Nothing ever grows in this rotting old hole
Everything is stunted and lost
And nothing really rocks
And nothing really rolls
And nothing's ever worth the cost

And I know that I'm damned if I never get out
And maybe I'm damned if I do
But with every other beat I got left in my heart
You know I'd rather be damned with you
Well, If I gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned
Dancing through the night with you
If I gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned
Gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned
Gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned
Dancing through the night
Dancing through the night
Dancing through the night with you

Oh Baby, you're the only thing in this whole world
That's pure and good and right
And wherever you are and wherever you go
There's always gonna be some light
But I gotta get out
I gotta break it out now
Before the final crack of dawn
So we gotta make the most of our one night together
When it's over you know
We'll both be so alone

Like a bat out of hell
I'll be gone when the morning comes
When the night is over
Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone gone gone
Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes
But when the day is done
And the sun goes down
And moonlight's shining through
Then like a sinner before the gates of heaven
I'll come crawling on back to you
Then like a sinner before the gates of heaven
I'll come crawling on back to you

I can see myself tearing up the road
Faster than any other boy has ever gone
And my skin is raw but my soul is ripe
And no one's gonna stop me now
I gotta make my escape
But I can't stop thinking of you
And I never see the sudden curve until it's way too late
And I never see the sudden curve till it's way too late

Then I'm dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun
Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning' bike
And I think somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell
And the last thing I see is my heart
Still beating
Oh breaking out of my body
And flying away
Like a bat out of hell
Then I'm dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun
Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike
And I think somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell
And the last thing I see is my heart
Still beating
Still beating
Oh breaking out of my body and flying away
Like a bat out of hell
Like a bat out of hell
Like a bat out of hell
Like a bat out of hell
Like a bat out of hell
Like a bat out of hell

I wrote this one myself. First English poem. I did fairly good I think.

I shall get the next plane out of here
Visiting relatives in America
We are losing the notion of sin
Initially she had drowned

My son had to turn in a poem demonstrating allusion. He procrastinated until it was overdue. We looked up allusion and he came up with this:

Allusion in Wonderland

This poem is one day too late
For a very important date
It's author is tardy
To the poetry party
And now he must suffer his fate.

It seems that allusions are references to works of another, but self-reference is another form of allusion. The form was not specified, and limerick is just what came out.
