I sat next to a lady on an airplane recently who presented me with two puzzles. I wouldn't let her give me the answers. I asked for her email address and smugly asserted that I would email her the answers within a week. It's been a month. I haven't solved either and I've lost her email. You probably can't help me with the email part, but maybe you can help me with the puzzles:

1. What three letter combination begins the most words in the English language? (e.g. WAN_ = want, wand, wane, etc.)

2. The word NEWS contains the initial letters of "North, east, west, and south". What other common group of four starts with these letters? Hint: The "N" represents a two-word name.
Proper nouns are OK.

1) "THE" This sounds like one of those riddles that has nothing to do with the question it seems to be asking, but rather the structure of the sentence.

It's simply a play on words. Personally, I hate this kind of riddle. But there's always the chance that there IS a different answer, and i'm barking up the wrong tree...

Can a month go by without someone posting that riddle?
Obviously not

OK - I'm an idiot. I haven't been tuning in to VSP obviously. I always was annoyed when someone posted a puzzle that was already stale from overexposure. So, I apologize and will take my consequence of being humiliated and will search through the old threads for the answer.
