Well red, blue, and yellow are all primary colors. Black is the absence of color, and grey is a shade of black. White is the combination of red, blue, and yellow. Green is the combination of blue and yellow, so remove black and grey and what colors do you have?
Red, blue, blue, yellow, yellow, red, blue, yellow, brown.
Blue and yellow repeat three times out of the nine "new" colors, and blue is darker. I would cut the blue wire.

How's about another hint?

I thought maybe the planets not visible from earth (but there's only two, right?)
Or maybe the planets that have rings (but there's four of them)
Or the planets that don't have moons (only two!)

There's three planets that weren't discovered until modern times - Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Mind you, Pluto's not a planet as much as a big chunk of rock. If we use the other two - Uranus and Neptune (which are fair proportionate), we can state that Uranus is usually a green-blue, while Neptune is a deeper blue. Neptune's colours seem darker. Maybe we have to cut the blue?

How can the absence of color have shades? "It's still the absence of color, but with a little more red, blue, and green."

I hold that grey is a color, because any "color" may become a gradient of shades ranging from white to _____ to black. (Example: )

How about the intended answer instead of a hint? It seems clear that even with the hint there are a variety of "right" answers.

The earth is 3rd out of nine. Between earth and it's moon I would chose the moon being darker. I cut the grey.

Actually, Earth will always have two sides in relationship to the sun. The day side and night side. The night side will definitely be darker. So cut the balck wire.
Oh but I can't I already cut the grey.....

Did anyone actually verify the solution?
Is this bomb defused or what?

oh the bomb went off alright... we are a bunch of post-explosion experts sitting in the middle of a deep dark smoking crater silently contemplating which wire should have been cut.

The three of the nine refers to the Earth, which shares its name with a type of wire. That type has yellow and green casing of which green is the darker. Some got green anyway so they diffused it!

In the US, we generally call that the "ground" wire, and it is bare.

I beg to differ!

Yes, what about it? None of those colors are intrinsically darker or lighter than the others. They differ in their frequencies but not in the amount of light in them (which could be any amount). Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!

I don't know if this was addressed, but suppose you are a member of a bomb squad and encounter a bomb with a note on it. The note tells you, either cryptically or explicitly, to cut the yellow wire. Which wire should you cut?

Actually, our interpretation of color is the result of our species' evolution under the light of a 'yellow' star. Our peak sensitivity is to the color yellow -- therefore, it is the brightest. If Earth orbited a red star, we'd probably see 'colors' further into the infrared and 'bluer' colors would be invisible to us.

Time flies like an *arrow*!

Anyway, I was wondering how bomb-makers rig it so that if you cut any other wire, it goes off. Also, couldn't you set it up so that if you cut *any* wire it goes off? I suppose it's by passing current through the other wires tied into a voltmeter...

Actually there is such a bomb, but it only has one wire. It sends electricity through a special liquid that if too much or too little electricity goes through the liquid, it goes off. I have no idea if it's real or not, but it was in the X-Files computer game.
