Sort of a puzzle with no universal solution:
How would you redesign the blue field on the US flag to add a fifty-first star?

Of course, it will up to the government to place the stars. They teams of mathematicians, computer scientists, and graphic artists will cost millions.

That's a somewhat different proportion than the existing blue field, but I'm sure it could be adapted. Wouldn't we admit all 13 new 'states' at once? Or would Yukon, Nunavut and NWT remain as territories?

It's unfair to leave the stars white, it's racist. So you add the 51st star, then make one black, one hispanic, one asian, one a woman, two a gay couple, etc. etc. etc.

To answer the OP:

[Most of] the stars on the Australian flag all have seven points, one for each of the six states and one extra for all the territories, since we can't be bothered to count them. [The other one has only five points for some unknown reason.]

I think Canada uses this system too (with 11 points), only their star is all messed up or something.

So how about a single star with 52 points? You don't even have to change the flag later, since no one's going to count them.

Who in his/her/its right mind would consider keeping Kansas and letting Nebraska go? That's ludicrous. The only purpose Kansas serves is to keep Oklahomans away.

Why don't we give Arkansas to the Afghanis, just as a gag? They could use a laugh, I think.

Yeah, the Canadian flag has a maple leaf with 11 points, plus a stem. Ten provinces, one for the three territories, and the stem represents our government in Ottawa, always off on a tangent. (well, co-tangent)

If there is a fifty-first state, it will probably be Puerto Rico. The Caribbean (sp?) State.

Personally, I think we should put one star at the end of each stripe, and then arrange thirty-eight stars in the blue field.
