Sure, I've had more than my share of luck in the past, but part-time friends, so-called brothers, and phony fellows have left me flat all too frequently. This, though... I believe this may be the end of me.
As I cower beneath the bulk of an immense, snow covered evergreen, my thoughts turn to the past -- family I ignored, even resented... studies I neglected... the girl I lost, even as she loved me. Shadows shift as the snowflakes fall, and all too quickly it is time to rise and renew my search.
I have failed. This snowstorm is likely to silence me long before I can find what I seek. I was a fool. I erred. I made a deadly mistake.
I'm freezing. I can no longer feel... anything.
Four out of five are the beasts -- the creatures of the land, the sea, the sky. What they don't require can keep me warm... but I'll need to find it.

uhm... fire?
freezing to death is a very good way to die tho. after few moments of terrible coldness you experience apathy in which you dont feel pretty much anything and finally you start hallucinating some. after a while you fall asleep never to wake up. no pain, nothing, just sleep your way over to the other side.  |

No, he seeks a roof over his head. The animals that have it are pretty much the rabbit, horse, raven, pigeon, trout, jay, and buck.

I never get these things, and no one ever posts a solution. You all walk off, laughing and patting each other on the back, while I sit here, wallowing in my sub-standard intellect....

The key line:

Find the five letter words, and anagram four of the letters to make animal names:
SHARE = HARE + S
PHONY = PONY + H
COWER = CROW + E
LOVED = DOVE + L
SHIFT = FISH + T
RENEW = WREN + E
ERRED = DEER + R
What they don't require is SHELTER.
