Knowing Disney, I sort of expect them to use one of the existing expanded universe novels to make the new movie.
By which I mean they better bring Grand Admiral Thrawn to the big screen. |

Well, as someone who thinks that the six Star Wars movies told a single story pretty well, with no significant loose ends and a very satisfying resolution, I see about as much point in making a new one as I do in JK Rowling writing a new Harry Potter book i.e. none whatsoever.
Quite apart from the nigh-on insurmountable problems of actually making something that coherently works - the "expanded universe" keeps on demonstrating that the Star Wars universe simply has no internal logic or plausibility beyond that necessary to tell the story of the films, and even that is shaky.
But our current cultural mindset seems rabidly averse to experimenting with anything new, and clings to known franchises wherever possible (with "reboots" being the current worst offender), so I don't blame a studio for taking the chance to buy a known brand, even if I despair of the outcome. _________________

Could you flesh this out for me?
I'm personally in agreement with Thok. I love the Thrawn trilogy, though I believe they'll probably start with Lucas's original idea for 7-9 of the rebuilding of the New Republic in the face of some new danger. _________________ Paragon Tally: 18 mafia, 3 SKs (1 twice), 1 cultist, numerous chat scum...and counting. |

The Thrawn books were the only expanded Universe stuff I read and they were brilliant. The real question is who plays Luke Han and Leia???? The original cast is a bit old to be dusting off their blasters. _________________ The Classic Blunders:

No older than Alec Guiness was in Episode 4. Who says they'd be the main characters? I, for one, would love to see an old Mark Hamill with a beard being some sort of guru in the new tril.
Honestly, there's nothing lose by this merger.
A) Lucas already sucked the life out of the franchise.
B)It was Lucas's decision to pass it on.
C)It is Lucas's story treatment that the writers are working on for 7-9. Everything else is NOT Lucas. IMO, that is a plus, because the only good thing about 1-3, imo, is the basic story (and John Williams). |

Hey, how is it going, Bravehat, good to see you posting.
Not a whole lot of opinion here, not a huge starwars groupie but I did like the series and will certainly watch this one when it comes out.
Some might roll their eyes but I like the idea of Disney being involved. |

Ialways miss characters that I have come to love and want to know what happened next, but without a significant conflict part of the plot such stories fall flat. Anyway that is what an epilogue is for.
I can see them expanding the cartoon part of the franchise. I don't mind what they have done with clone wars, but then again I am not a diehard fan either.
My worry is that Star Wars will lose its dark edge under Disney. It seemed like most people didn't like about Jar Jar. He was too light and comical to fit in that world. _________________ I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong. |

I agree with Thok that there doesn't seem to be much point in continuing the story that was already told. Not only did the story resolve definitively, making a continuation trilogy anti-climactic by nature, but the fact that the story was about the most significant galaxy-wide conflict to ever happen doesn't bode well for even another separate saga either. I much prefer the idea of a prologue or epilogue, or both. It would be cool if one or both were 3 hours long.
As it stands, however, it is confirmed that they will be releasing 7-9, so, even though I'd rather they set it a century or so after ROTJ and start a new saga with it, it's still fun to speculate on what a continuation trilogy could possibly be about. Lucas did mention decades ago when 7-9 seemed more definite to him, that the third trilogy would be about trying to set up a new government in the aftermath of the Empire. It would be interesting to start off with a war between not two, but many different groups all trying to take control of the galaxy, all identifying different problems as the primary cause of the Old Republic's downfall, and all quite convinced they are right. Kind of like religious wars. I know Lucas already wrote a story treatment, but one can dream. |

A friend of mine likes to point at Disney's treatment of Marvel when I bring this up. I'm still not totally convinced, but the new Iron Man movie looks like it might provide hope. _________________ Paragon Tally: 18 mafia, 3 SKs (1 twice), 1 cultist, numerous chat scum...and counting. |
