Solved That One!

PostPosted: Sun Jun 29, 2008 3:45 am    Post subject: 1 Reply with quote

I miss quickies. So I'm bringing them back!

Here are the rules, if you have forgotten (or are doing quickies for the first time):

1. Unless otherwise specified, all solutions are lower-case.
2. If you solve a quickie, you may log into that quickie account with the solution to the quickie as the password. Please make a puzzle of your own and post it with that account. Don't forget to change the account password to the solution to your own quickie.
3. If you solve a quickie but have none of your own, you're welcome to leave a note saying that you've solved it but are passing it on.

To prevent a hard puzzle from deadlocking the entire thread, I've made two accounts, so there can be two simultaneous quickies being solved at one time. I was going to make 3, but I ran out of puzzle ideas.

Here is the first one:

Okay, here's Quickie #3...

I've cut out a rectangular piece from a chessboard, cutting only on the lines.

If I were to tell you any one of the following you could not figure out my rectangle: the perimeter, the area, or the length of the diagonal.

Oops, I've already told you enough. The answer is in the form "sixbythree", if the rectangle's sides were of length 6x3.

Got it, though you probably ought to have said that the answer was in the form "threebysix". Leaving it for now because I don't have anything else yet.

groza again; I think I beat AZu to changing the answer... I realized I actually *do* have a puzzle that's been sitting in my archives but it can wait. I have to manipulate the image a bit. AZu can go first. I'll change the password and pm it to him.
Edit: but in the interest of keeping the thread moving I'm stealing it back if he doesn't claim within two hours Revenge most foul!

Fourteen thematic words are hidden in this grid vertically and horizontally. After you find those you should be able to get the answer.

I tried handling it as Braille, but few of the spaces translated to letters (and with 17 columns, it doesn't break up evenly. An expanded version got the word "owl", but I suspect that's a coincidence.

It is Braille. Don't bother trying to split it up evenly; I used Braille because it would behave differently from normal letters.

Answer: The original picture is here, but this knowledge isn't necessary to solving the puzzle. Notice that the image is 26 rows high and 6 columns wide, and there is one missing block in each column, in rows 16, 15, 18, 20, 1, and 12, respectively. Taking A=1, B=2, etc, we get PORTAL.

"Dude, I think my MP3 player is freakin' broken."
"Oh? What makes you think that?"
"Well, it won't display song titles or artists' names correctly anymore. I found this awesome song called 'Aeiou' by the little-known artist Bcdfghjklmnpqrstvwxyz, but it only shows up on my MP3 player as vvvvv by ccccccccccccccccccccc."
"Huh. That's odd."
"And look at all these other song titles that it's screwing up!"

Are you saying it's not quick enough? Wink

I have no problem moving it to a separate thread and handing the baton to someone else.

I've made a new thread for the Braille on account of it not being quick enough. Link: http://www.greylabyrinth.com/discussion/viewtopic.php?p=447485#447485
In the meanwhile, here's something a little quicker to keep the thread moving.

The first one in the second row is a Komodo Dragon, I think, which plays well with the dragon in the middle of the bottom. The last picture in the second row is a snake, and I think that the second one is from the musical Grease.

Who is that whom you've labeled 'Wolf"?

1st row: ROCK, PAPER, SCISSOR, WATER, TREE?
2nd row: Dragon?, Grease?, ?, -, SNAKE
3rd row: (MUSIC? SOUND?), WOLF, Dragon, FIRE/FIRED?, -

Row 2 col 2 is the "Greased Lightning" scene from "Grease"

Row 2 col 5 I think is a "toilet snorkel" - patented by someone as a device to use in the event of being trapped in a burning building, filling with smoke, and allows the user to breath the "clean" air from the sewer pipe beyond the U bend. I saw it on QI, so it might not be reliable info!

Whew, lots of posts in between starting to type and posting!

So, dragons breathe fire, a toilet snorkel helps you breathe in a fire...

OK. That's just gross. I had assumed it was just a plumber's snake, but I see that the top is not just a handle.

OK, the pic is not the same:

so it probably is just a plumber's device.

I'm pretty sure the rook at h1 is the first piece White needs to move. It seems obvious.

Wait. . . how can Black have 10 pieces on the board? Unless I suck at chess, it would seem that White needs to have made at least 8 pawn captures.

You're right! That's because there ought to be a black pawn on d6. xD
It didn't change the solution, though! It's now corrected.
Oh, and it is black to move!

Huzzah! I finally got that one. - Scurra
Answer: sponge. They are all throws in RPS15 (which extends the set from the original 3.) I had actually twigged this quite early, but missed the answer word off my list when I was checking them!

And here's a replacement.

Oh dear. I dropped one of my tiles on the floor...

For Quickies Reloaded I get :

1.a2 Rxb1 2.Rg4+ Kd3 3.Ne5++

But that doesn't seem to be the password. Am I wrong?

Whew. Glad I noticed that the chessboard was kinda screwy. =O

Also, does anyone care to solve the last song title in my puzzle, and discern the password? Or shall I spoil?

Maybe I suck at chess again, but I think Kd3 is an illegal move, because the king would then be in check by the bishop at b1 Never mind. There is no bishop there once it's captured. Yup. I suck at chess. Don't highlight the invisi-text. Please. For the love of all that is holy. <3
