Would anyone like to get a team of 4 together for the annual CISRA puzzle competition?
For those of you who are unfamiliar, it's an Australian competition that exists completely online. It consists of 5 rounds of 4 puzzles each. The first round launches tonight, and then the other rounds release once a day starting next Monday night (a week from now). Puzzles are very similar to the MIT hunt. There is usually an optional metapuzzle, but unlike the MIT hunt, winning is not based on solving the metapuzzle, it's based on solving the 20 puzzles as quickly as possible (you suffer point penalties if there are puzzles left unsolved when another round is released).
The team that I usually do it with has dissolved, though I may have one person who is still interested. That leaves 2-3 openings. Let me know...first come, first served! It's a lot of fun, and it's a bit more intimate than MIT due to the small team sizes. |

Yes. You can sign up as a team of one, if you so desire (and many do). |

I probably can't, since I just registered a team of one to meet the deadline. Not sure I have time to do the below...though I could still try.
I want to join a team, but I've already registered by myself or in a smaller team. What should I do?
E-mail us (puzzles@cisra.canon.com.au) to request deactivation of your team before Puzzle Week begins. After we confirm that your team has been deactivated, you will be free to join another team. Do not attempt to join a team while still on another team - you will disqualify both teams. Once Puzzle Week begins, nobody may change teams.

Puzzle Week doesn't begin for a week. Only the first round of puzzles releases tonight.
MNOWAX, if you really want to give up your spot, that's fine. All it would require is for me to add Suspence to the doc and to remove you. Suspence can be an "informal" member until his team of one can be deleted.

No, we have more secure means of working on the puzzles. And we've already made some headway on some of them.

Definitely don't work on puzzles here because
A) Someone who doesn't want spoilers may find them by mistake; several GLers are participating.
B) Someone who DOES want spoilers may find them and have an unfair advantage. Remember that there are prizes involved, even if most of us aren't eligible for them. |

I wouldn't mind joining in with someone just to work the puzzles.
I've already solved 2 of the 4 initial ones, and pretty much nearly have a third one solved (Who Really Shot First?). The one that has me a bit dumbfounded is The Question of Infinity. It would be nice to get anoher's perspective on them. |

Manually. Don't have good programming software to bother with writing the program. (It is also less satisfying in puzzle solving when you use the crutch.)

| I don't even see how you'd do that one by computer, and a manual approach seems pretty straightforward. Start with the top left one, and there are only 3 choices for what goes next to it on the left. For each of those, there are only a few choices for what goes above it. etc. |

That really depends on how you look at it. Writing a program to solve a puzzle for you can often be just as difficult, if not more so, than solving the puzzle yourself. |

Looking through the team listings, there's also a team called "The Last Place". They are much closer to living up to their name than we are.
We can't be sure, but we believe we've solved all 4 meta-puzzle pieces in addition to the 4 regular puzzles, so we're off to a nice start.

And as long as you solve all the puzzles before the next round, everybody is really tied for first until the last round. Only then does who finishes first really matter. (Of course, we'll have to solve puzzles faster than our current rate). |
