I've made a slight tweak which I think helps, but I'm not sure.

I had tried a similar format, but couldn't come up with a way to make the definition work. I started with:

Delusional "studs" in no clothes.

But wasn't happy with that, and struggled to improve it, before switching to a different idea.

It won't mean anything to you, but the Manawatu Standard.

And by the way, the cryptic in that newpaper would be absolutely roasted on the Grey Labyrinth. One GL'er who actually came here did it and was scathing about it. Sometimes (albeit rare) it has some awesome clues. But it uses a convention (Possibly an Australasian convention) where ! and ? are irrelevant and used when the sentence looks or reads nicer with them. Indicators are often poor, and a lot of extraneous words are used. Sometimes there aren't any indicators at all. If it wasn't for the GL, I wouldn't know any better. Simply put, by and large NZ cryptics are not up to scratch. But because they are the ones I end up doing daily I often end up with clues that seem okay to me - that when I share them with GLers via email - they are quite happy to point out all the issues.

My clue: They can found in the garden shed?

Explanation: Nudists can be found in the garden, with their clothes shed.

But if people don't get it, they won't vote it. I'll quickly see if I can find another one. It was the first thing I thought of when I put the word down.

I'll replace mine with this: Nudists They barely appear in groups?

(And Novice, I did say I was going to replace it, and the explanation was for Elethiomel. Not much point in "saying 'I got it' as though my explanation post was for you)

I'm sorry if I've offended you. I was merely trying to say that I was able to follow the thought process behind the clue, so I thought it was a good attempt but that it didn't quite work. I thought the idea behind it was clever.

Whoa Amb, no need to get hostile there. I read novice's comment as "There is a flaw with this clue and it isn't that it's too difficult." Personally I agree; what I see in both versions of your clue are cute, punny definitions and no wordplay. They'd be great clues for a flat crossword but for a cryptic they don't quite work.

I put a poll up to decide between COPPICE and TRIVIAL PURSUIT for the best-so-far (they tied for the lead in our last poll with 10 options). We can vote on that while we get our next round of clues together.

Since TRIVIAL PURSUIT is mine, I did my duty and voted for COPPICE.
