I will agree that San for Bushmen is obscure, but it isn't a bad cryptic. Obscurity is sometimes favorable in cryptics. Yet I will admit that I didn't favor the obscurity, though I do find it definitely better than the incorrect allusive use of sand for sandman and sandbox as the clue. Though hinting at the tie-in to these closed compound nouns, these cryptics' readings fail to correctly construct the tie-in..

Elethiomel, I don't see it as a &lit clue. As such, I found your first of the two to be a better cryptic. Actually, the first isn't much better. The first word is not really a synonym, which, deductively, is meant to be such.

Btw, I picked this word from a real cryptic crossword. It was in the 'yesterdays solution' and I wish I knew what the clue was. I didn't buy the paper that day.
