Entrances to speedway area near Daytona Beach - I'm not convinced that "beach" is a good synonym for "sand"; a beach can be made from sand, certainly (I don't know enough about Daytona Beach specifically, although I know that's only there for the acronym) but sand is not a beach.

beach n. 2. The sand or pebbles on a shore. — The American Heritage Dictionary

From the lexicon-given definition, beach is synonymous with sand. Though I will admit it is not an exact definition for sand, but it is a good one. Very, very, very few words are synonymous if one requires the words to be in total congruency. And, if such would be the case there would be few cryptic clues, e.g., grit is not an exact synonym of sand.

Bushmen drive on gravel - don't understand this clue at all. I'm obviously stupid.

Let me explain it to you...

Bushmen drive on gravel
SAN + D // SAND
wordplay definition: Bushmen = San
San - The indigenous people of southern Africa, also referred to as Bushmen, Sho, Basarwa, Kung, or Kwhe [Wikipedia disambiguation of SAN]
wordplay definition: Drive = D [abbreviation (Look on the gear shift of your vehicle!]
wordplay attachment indicator: on {target intended: D on end of SAN}
clue definition: gravel = (coarse) sand

Yeah, the interpretation of the &! is sandbox and sandbag, which is why I voted for it as well.

@Dejmar: That's fairly obscure for a cryptic.

I will agree that San for Bushmen is obscure, but it isn't a bad cryptic. Obscurity is sometimes favorable in cryptics. Yet I will admit that I didn't favor the obscurity, though I do find it definitely better than the incorrect allusive use of sand for sandman and sandbox as the clue. Though hinting at the tie-in to these closed compound nouns, these cryptics' readings fail to correctly construct the tie-in..

Rember the rule. Don't peek until after submission of your own:

CHAMPION

An apostle is Christ's ambassador picking only leading couples. (8)

clue definition: an apostle = champion
link word: is
wordplay: leading couples (first two letters each of) CH[rist]+AM[bassador]+PI[cking]+ON[ly]

I guess I'll go out on a limb and submit the second one for the poll.

Elethiomel, I don't see it as a &lit clue. As such, I found your first of the two to be a better cryptic. Actually, the first isn't much better. The first word is not really a synonym, which, deductively, is meant to be such.

Not as a replacement, and, thus, may be ignored for the poll (unless the pollster decides to include it):
Chief composition of Chopin (a musical leader): Waltzes. (8)
clue definition: chief = champion
wordplay content indicator: leader {target: musical = M)
wordplay anagram indicator: waltzes {target: the composition of: CHOPIN+A+M}

Although the double def probably deserves it (I had a coin toss in the end. I voted for the hidden word; although I think it isn't ideal, it's always tricky to do longer words in that format without looking exceptionally clunky.)
