Actually, I am marking this now...

It wasn't hard for someone...and Suspence is apparently good at guessing.
I don't deliberately make harder rounds...I have a large collection of questions and just select some at random, so any one round is going to be as difficult as any other round - on average.

Just waiting for Undercover Monk to submit an entry and we're done for round 3. By Friday if possible...

All answers in. I'll get around to publishing the details later today if I get time (it's going to be busy today)...and maybe get round 4 in place by Friday.

Olympiad Round 3 - Answers

1. What is a humidor?
a. an Ancient Egyptian farm implement
b. a Cigar Box
c. an Electronic Component
d. a Portable Heater

Slightly confusing as it's better known as a humidity controlled room to store cigars but only one player failed to get this right.

2. The Danjon scale measures what?
a. Brightness of lunar eclipses
b. Pain
c. Physical exertion
d. Religious belief

Found this by accident and thought it could be interesting.

3. Who is the lead singer of rock band AC/DC?
a. Brett Anderson
b. Brian Ferry
c. Brian Johnson
d. Jim Kerr

4. In an English scrabble set, how many different letters have just ONE tile.
a. 4
b. 5
c. 6
d. 7

Letters J, K, Q, X, Z have just one tile each. Half the players probably missed the K.

5. Which is the largest island in the Mediterranean sea?
a. Corsica
b. Cyprus
c. Sardinia
d. Sicily

6. Which element is directly below Silver in the periodic table?
a. Gold
b. Iridium
c. Palladium
d. Platinum

One guess each at the wrong alternatives, yes, it's the obvious one.

7. Who is the father of actress Angelina Jolie?
a. Dustin Hoffman
b. Robert Redford
c. Roy Scheider
d. Jon Voight

Roy Scheider was the popular wrong answer.

8. The 'Lev' is the currency in which country?
a. Bulgaria
b. Hungary
c. Poland
d. Romania

9. How many people have walked on the moon?
a. 10
b. 12
c. 14
d. 16
e. 18

I should have put zero as an option...for the moonlanding hoax believers. Do we have any here?

10. Which sport does the South African Oscar Pistorius participate in?
a. Athletics
b. Cricket
c. Rugby
d. Tennis

Known as the "Blade Runner" as he has no lower legs. I thought he might be famous enough, but at least this question stopped Scurra scoring a perfect 10.

The really funny bit of this was that the evening of the day I sent my answers I was at a train station which had one of those animated ad sequences running down the escalator, and who do you think was being used to promote whatever it was (a perfume I think?) with his name prominently displayed... I laughed out loud and then had to explain to my colleague why this was funny.

Apparently he got the blade runner a few hours after submitting his answers!

I was surprised you didn't get the "men on the moon" question.

As for catching Scurra...is your "Scurra is champion" banner primed and ready? You know, the one you didn't need last time?

Good news: My score on this round would have been good enough to advance in every other round.

Bad news: I don't think that will matter much in this round.

But hey, at least I knew Oscar Pistorius Razz

Elle/Eleanor was a bit of a giveaway.

4. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" is a quote from which film?
a. Apocalypse Now
b. The Deer Hunter
c. Hamburber Hill
d. Platoon

I would be shocked if anyone had got this one wrong.

a. An Alcoholic drink
b. Clothing
c. Music
d. A type of Transport

6. Tonometry measures what?
a. Accurate tuning of piano wires

c. Laser frequency
d. Touch sensitivity

It's always a delight when someone picks an option I've made up...(a)

7. Ohio has a shore on which one of the great lakes?
a. Erie
b. Huron
c. Michigan
d. Ontario
e. Superior

8. In braille, which letter is represented by the following code (where X is a raised dot)?

- X
X -
X -

a. F
b. K
c. S
d. T

A tricky one that players might guess but few will know.

9. What is a Baobab?
a. An item of clothing
b. An African Deer
c. A Tree
d. An underwater volcanic vent

10 In standard poker, how many possible combinations of 5 cards will result in a flush (flush + straight flush).
a. 3,744
b. 5,148
c. 7,286

3 Undercover Monk (made a bit of a mess of his answer list, hence the low score)

We say goodbye to Suspence, novice and Undercover Monk.
With 4 players scoring equal top, we could be in for a very interesting final.

Sigh. I can't decide which of 5 you consider to be really easy. I knew more this round than any other: 7 I knew and I guessed right on one more.

I only knew #2 and #3 for sure, so I don't mind missing out on this round and posting an embarrassing score.

Thanks to 3iff for running. Well done, as always.

All results are in. Just need to write things up which will take an hour or so. We do have a winner.

Olympiad Round 5 - The Final

1. When sodium metal is burnt in air, what colour does it produce?
a. Green
b. Red
c. White
d. Yellow

Many street lights have sodium lamps and that's the reason they look yellow.

2. Thom Yorke is famous in which field?
a. Acting
b. Choreography
c. Musician
d. Novellist

He's the vocalist with Radiohead

3. The America's Cup is a competition involving which sport?
a. Baseball
b. Golf
c. Tennis
d. Yachting

Our only 100% correct question.

4. How many strings on a cello?
a. 3
b. 4
c. 5
d. 6

5. Operation Barbarossa (The WW2 German attack on Russia) began when?
a. 17 May 1940
b. 22 June 1941
c. 1 June 1942
d. 3 July 1943

Most players wrongly guessed at 1942.

6. "Do or do not. There is no try" is a quote from which film?
a. Starwars. A New Hope
b. Starwars. The Empire Strikes Back
c. Starwars. Return of the Jedi

7. Venera 16 was a Russian spacecraft sent where in 1983?
a. Mars
b. Mercury
c. Moon
d. Venus

Venera/Venus...was it obvious or a trap? (it was the obvious).

8. In the 1983 film "Trading Places", which commodity item is featured in the closing stages of the film?
a. Oil
b. Orange Juice
c. Pork Bellies
d. Wheat

MNO surprisingly got this wrong. This could have taken the game to a playoff.

9. The Indian ocean earthquake (~9.2 magnitude) off the coast of Sumatra on the 26th of December, which killed over 230,00 people, occurred in which year?

a. 2002
b. 2003
c. 2004
d. 2005

This one is so recent that it's difficult to remember. I wrote the question a few weeks back and yet I couldn't remember the answer.

10. According to a 2010 census, what is the approximate population of Mexico?
a. 81m
b. 96m
c. 112m
d. 123m

Each of the 4 answers were chosen, so obviously a tricky question.

Scores
======

9 Scurra - The new champion

8 MNO
7 Dented Ford and referee
2 jesternl

Congratulations to Scurra for winning the second Quiz Olympiad. MNO finished just 1 point behind and says "second is a victory to me when Scurra is here". Dented Ford and referee share 3rd place.
Unfortunately, jesternl had a nightmare last round but finished 5th overall.

Code:

    The Final

==========================================
    Tot |  9    2    7    7    8   33

For an average of 6.6 for the round.

Performance of the top 5 players over the whole competition
Code:

     Scu   DF    MNO   ref   jes
================================
R1    9     6     5     6     7
R2    7     7     5     5     5
R3    9     7     8     6     7
R4    8     8     8     6     8
Fin   9     7     8     7     2
================================
Tot  42    35    34    30    29

Those scores are out of 49 as we had a void question in round 2. Scurra had an 85% hit rate with his answers. Impressive.

Thanks to everyone who took part, hope you enjoyed it.
