I came across this the other day. It's a poem composed by James Rambo for Word Ways, May 1977.

Use fulsome howl or direst word in galling us; toil over a shoddy ode?
Listen, dressed in gyves, tiger, allies fall, ensnared in timeless eras, mentally in agony, essays in gall.
Outwit Hades, ignore verses, you real lover? Come!

Useful somehow, Lord, I rest, wording all in gusto I love.
Rash odd yodel is tendresse; dingy vestige rallies fallen snared.
In time, lesser as men tally, I nag on — yes, say, sing all out — with a design.
O reverses, you’re all overcome!

I guess "a Dallas Cowboy" is a "Texan", but this is tough since there is another NFL team called the Texans (from Houston)

Yeah, I think it may start with

IMPEL VIC...
and
I'M PELVIC

Also, I had thought maybe RENAL would line up with ALLEY for small street, but that would be instead of AVENUE and I don't see anything to work with ..LEY.

Or PERITONEAL (related to a cavity of the kidney) which contains TONE (sound), but that didn't end up leading anywhere.

SINEW AVE = MONEY + SMALL STREET
SINE WAVE = SOUND PROPERTY

A definition in the 1913 edition of Webster's Revised Unabridged gives the quote under the figurative meaning of Sinew, that which supplies strength or power, "Money is often called the sinews of war".

I am not convinced. Money is also the "blood of the economy", but it doesn't make it a synonym for blood.

IMPER/IT/ONE-A/SINEW/AVE/SIGNAL/ARMED.
I'M/PERITONEA/SINE WAVE/SIGN/ALARMED.

IMPER < imperative (abbr.) = require
IT = easy [slang?]
ONE-A = make
SINEW = money
AVE = small street
SIGNAL = sound
ARMED = with weapon

I'M = I am
PERITONEA = related to a cavity of the kidney
SINE WAVE = sound property
SIGN = direction
ALARMED = astonished

But blood and sinew are both figuratively synonymous to money. I suspect that there is a dictionary that might directly provide the figurative definition of sinew as money.

Possibly, but why clue "sinew" as "money" and not "tendon" or "ligament".

"...Money was the sinew of all things...." from a translation of Plutach's Lives [Cleomenes].
"The portion and sinew of her fortune, her marriage dowry." William Shakespeare
"The bodies of men, muntion, and money, may justly be called the sinews of war." Sir Walter Raleigh

In Webster's Revised Unabridged, 1913 Edition, under the entry Sinew:
Money alone is often called the sinews of war.
And, as an entry in the Century Dictionary: Sinews of War : money

I don't know why the choice to not use ligament or tendon...but doesn't the "solution" I presented, work otherwise?

I think your sinew definition is a stretch. Wink

So I would guess your answer is not the intended one. I think those examples you listed are metaphors, not synonyms.

I won't deny that the quotes were using sinew metaphorically. I did say sinew was figuratively synonymous, not just synonymous with money. I would have been happier with the connection if Jack Ian had tied war to it so as to make the connection much closer. But, unless you can come up with a better co-relation to the two cryptic sign makers, I, myself, am satisified until Jack Ian says otherwise.

I'm willing to confirm this, as I thought my definition was a little unfair. As for the rest, I'm gonna keep schtum for now.
And DejMar, wow! I gotta admire your effort, but that kind of thinking is the kind that uses the bible to prove the existence of extra-terrestrials. Fascinating, but way of the mark. Felicitous

Trying again from the start... could you have meant "easy mark" instead of "easy make"? "Easy mark" would be victim:

Require easy make money small street sound with weapon. (7)
IMPEL VICTIM BREad ... SIGNAL ARMED

I am related to a cavity of the kidney sound property direction astonished (5)
I'M PELVIC TIMBRE SIGN ALARMED

But that uses up the 5 words already. So close and yet so far.

I think I have it (though I still think "easy make" should be "easy mark"):

Require easy make money small street sound with weapon. (7)
IMPEL VICTIM BREAD MINI ST RATIONAL ARMED

I am related to a cavity of the kidney sound property direction astonished (5)
I'M PELVIC TIMBRE ADMINISTRATION ALARMED

Nice.

Although I think that ideally, signmakers should read as coherent statements (both the clues and the solutions).

That didn't line up, all the spaces got removed. Here it is formatted the other way...

Require = IMPEL
easy make (mark) = VICTIM
money = BREAD
small = MINI
street = ST
sound = RATIONAL
with weapon = ARMED

I am = I'M
related to a cavity of the kidney = PELVIC
sound property = TIMBRE
direction = ADMINISTRATION
astonished = ALARMED

That's it.
I agree that a good puzzle should involve coherent sentences, but it was a hasty offering just to give you all something to do.
As for "easy mark/make", either are acceptable, "easy make" is perhaps more British English.
Well done.

It just amazes me how bad I am at solving these. I usually don't try as hard as I just did with this one. I looked at every synonym of 'entertaining' and 'replaceable' (initially just in my head, later using thesaurus.com) trying to find something that could mean the other. This approach got me nowhere. Those of you who can solve these, is that your approach, or is it more of a gestalt thing, or what?

That's typically how I go about it. In this case, "replaceable" is probably a loose synonym. There is a much more exact synonym, but I thought it was too exact as to be a potential spoiler. I think this is where your thesaurus issue is coming in.
