I don't recognize any of these, but I'm not totally sure I know what I'm supposed to do.

My initial thought was that these are actual names of famous people who go by a different name. If so, I got nothing, other than to add that if you had listed Paul Hewson, I would've got that one.

I have actually just written a puzzle like this myself for a set.
I can't tell if the one above has an "answer" but mine does.

KNOCK, KNOCK

These records have got badly messed up.
I'm certain none of these people belong together.

Patrick and Sophie
Matt and Nicola
William and Janet
Christopher and Caroline
Tom and Billie
Paul and Nicholas
Sylvester and Deborah
Peter and Mary
Jon and Wendy

There only seems to be one overlap with your list! I'll offer:

Adam Mitchell - Bruno somebody
Grace Holloway - Daphne Ashbrook
Jamie McCrimmon - Fraser Hines
Tegan Jovanka - Janet Fielding
Wilfred Mott - (Sir) Bernard Cribbens*
Harry Sullivan - Ian (Marter?)
Peri Brown - Nicola Bryant
Jo Grant - Katy Manning
Steven Taylor - Peter Purves
Craig Owens - James Corden
Melanie Bush - Bonnie Langford

*yes, OK, so he isn't a knight. We all want to know why not.

The required answer (which I'm still waiting for) was requesting who their doctor was...but you've essentially got close enough.

I would guess that the list you want is: 9-8-2-5-10-4-6-3-1-11-7
(although the overlap in places makes it a bit contentious, but this appears to be a "unique" list.)

That looks good. Seems there isn't a definitive answer due to overlaps. I perhaps should have taken more care over the question before submitting it.

I think the "introductory text" bit is somewhat unhelpful; I wish I hadn't included it now.

Hint: Try making them the fictional versions.

I did try that but I'm getting nowhere. I've looked at the character names (is that what you mean?) but nothing is coming to mind. My Dr Who colleague is stumped too.

Even bigger hint (well, basically the solution, really!):
You should have a list of numbers and character names. Try using one on the other. Watch out for the couple of tricksy ones!

Seems I can't even get it when you give us the answer...and my colleague is even more useless than me!

I see "1" and "Ace" but I'm betting that's the wrong path...
If it's right, then I cannot see other connection. Am I being incredibly dense?

Yes, that's the answer I was looking for.*
I was quite pleased with the idea, although I concede that using Ace was a bit of a cheat given that I use the "full" names of two other characters, so strictly speaking I ought to have use Dorothy for that one. Revenge most foul!

*It's part of a puzzle hunt set, so it also has another use, but that's not especially relevant here.
