In honor of my puzzle, The Ballad of Maxwell Control, a game that some of you might find fun.
I'll list a commonly (or not so commonly) misheard lyric, your goal is to figure out what song it came from and the correct lyric.
When you post the right answer (you really don't need to be told you're right), list another one for people to play...
You might as well face it, you're a dick with a glove. _________________ -LmL

Actually bgg, the correct lyric (I believe) is "In the Garden of Eden"
but everyone knows the song as "Inna Godda Davida" (or In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida) _________________ Sentran

| "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is a song by Iron Butterfly, released on their 1968 album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. |
| Quote: |
| A commonly related story says that the song's title was originally "In the Garden of Eden" but at one point in the course of rehearsing and recording, singer Doug Ingle became intoxicated and slurred the words, creating the mondegreen that stuck as the title. However, the liner notes on 'the best of' CD compilation state that drummer Ron Bushy was listening to the track through headphones, and could not clearly distinguish what Doug Ingle answered when Ron asked him for the title of the song (which was originally "In-the-Garden-of-Eden"). An alternate explanation, as given in the liner notes of the 1995 re-release of the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida album, is that Ingle was drunk and/or high when he first told Bushy the title, and Bushy wrote it down. Bushy then showed Ingle what he had written, and the slurred title stuck. |

Well, it's been two months with neither a guess nor a hint for bgg1996's entry, so I reckon this is up for grabs now.
It seems I've always had a gift (or curse?) for mishearing song lyrics. The following six specimens are actual, real examples of what I honestly thought was being sung in their particular songs, sometimes for more years than I'm willing to admit.
I don't consider any of these songs to be obscure, (that is to say, I've heard each of them numerous times on the radio) and most of them should be pretty easy to guess. A couple may be somewhat less easy, and one is so far off the mark that it may present a real challenge (I still occasionally get harassed by my friends for it, and I have no good explanation for how I could have heard it that way).
I think two hints are in order here, one open and one invissed. The open hint is that these are all songs from the 70's and 80's:
1. All I want is to have a piece of pie.
2. And the free dog will run.
3. Do the lucky lady.
4. I ain't your livin' centerfold.
5. She's so confident.
6. You gotta stop and consider it.
For the invissed hint, here are the groups/artists responsible for each song, in no particular order. Don't peek until you get stuck!
Aerosmith
Boston
David Bowie
J. Geils Band
Peter Gabriel
Van Halen |

I'm not surprised that a guy from England would guess the lyric written in french, but I am a little surprised no one's gotten the first entry yet--I thought it would be first to go. Needless to say, all three guesses are correct. I'll hold off on giving anymore hints for awhile, as invissed artists + process of elimination should provide extra help now.
Amusing anecdote time: I'd thought of giving the following as a bonus puzzle illustrating a misheard lyric of unusual length:
Where you going when the mice are brown, and I feel what I feel when the dogs begin to smell her?
...because I knew damn well that couldn't possibly be what they were actually singing. But out of curiosity, I thought I'd do something I'd never bothered to do before, which is to look up what the actual lyrics were supposed to be. You can probably guess the result. While there are in fact no mice present, it turns out the dogs do indeed begin to smell her.
W
....T
.......F???
So I was left without a bonus puzzle. Fortunately I always carry around a backup bonus puzzle for just such an emergency. I'm not really into country music, but when you live in Eastern Oregon you learn to endure its constant presence, and digging back in my memory I recalled one song in particular that was frequently played on the jukebox at the local watering hole. Inevitably this song would be accompanied by someone asking 'Did he really just say he had pickles in his head?' (This question, by the way, was often asked by people who were into country music. Sometimes it was asked by the person who actually played the song.) The question was never successfully resolved.
So I thought it might make a good substitute puzzle, but after the dog-smelling debacle, I figured I'd better check the lyrics just to make sure. And so, after many years, if ever I'm presented that question again, I can finally answer in complete confidence "No. No, he does not have pickles in his head."
So...what does he have?
I've got heartaches in my pocket, and I've got pickles in my head. |

If memory serves, this is Plush by Stone Temple Pilots.
I believe the actual lyric is "Where you going with the mask I found".

From my personal favorite misheard lyrics song of all time - And I called and I said I don't know what I said - although those might be the actual lyrics since no one really knows. _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |

Another hint on the same song - I don't know whether I'm the boxer or the bag. It certainly sounds like this is the correct lyric, but given what the song is supposedly about, it's almost certainly not.
Sad, because I've always thought that was a cool analogy, not knowing whether you were to boxer or the punching bag... _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |
