My wife was frantic. "Look at his face! I think we need to bring him to the doctor."
I just smiled. "No need. I know what that is."

BTW This is a true story, so I will be able to answer some questions that might mislead you, in that the answer is irrelevant. If I think this is so, then I will state N/A after my answer.

Was his face discolored (discoloured)?

Was his face disfigured (disfigoured)?

Did he appear to be bleeding?

Is "he" your son? A young child?

What's for dinner?

Is this something that a man would [at least, stereotypically] know more about than a woman?

Do we need to know the child's exact age? If so 1? 2? 3? 4? ...etc.

Is the child [Can we call him...bob?] trying to trick you?

Is bob's face "partially" discoloured: Red? Blue? Green? Yellow? Black?

Is it important to know why your wife wanted to get him to a doctor? [i.e. do we need to know what she thought was wrong with bob?]

Does face relate to the entire surface of the face, ear to ear, forehead to chin? Or only a portion of the face?

If only a portion of the face, is it the portion of the face where on a man hair would naturally grow (beard and mustache)? Does it extend into the check area?

Was the boy holding his breath to turn his face blue?

Was the discoloring smoething your son specifically did - or was the discoloring something that happened on it's own?

Are we dealing with sunburn?

Is bob's face "partially" discoloured: Red? Blue? Green? Yellow? Black? Purple, around the mouth and chin with what appeared to be burst blood vessels and a mild rash

Is it important to know why your wife wanted to get him to a doctor? [i.e. do we need to know what she thought was wrong with bob? She assumed it was an allergic reaction

Was it a hickey? Yes - Self-induced Felicitous

That's it. You've got it.
What actually happened was that I did a quick web-search for "purple chin" and saw lots of "My son has a purple chin" hits. I thought it strange that it was all boys and so I dug a little deeper and among all of the medical advice about applying various pharmaceutical chemicals to the area was a simple post by someone named punksailor. Then all of a sudden the penny dropped.
punksailor here wrote:
Once when I was little I was playing with a cup, putting it over my chin and mouth and sucking to vacuum seal it onto my face, and I did it so long that it gave me a big purple bruise on my chin that looked like a hickey. Maybe he did something like that.

I had seen my son do something similar the day before.
I've shown him this page btw. and he got a kick out of it. He's getting a little sick of us calling him Bob though. Wink
