Damnit, this forum won't let me create my Breakwater Logic - Not Adequate For Real Life Situations thread either. Oh well.

Anyway, Breakwater logic is not adequate for real life situations because, how are we supposed to build any subways with all those pipes around? Srsly.

Oscar, while I'm not sure either but after googling, the word could be in reference to the story of his son Telemachus as an infant, which would make the item in question a "plough" But that's just a guess.

The missing word from the intro is actually meant to tie this puzzle to the last one; the solution to Close The Gates is what you are purchasing at the shop.
The solution to *this* puzzle fillis in the blank in Skinny's note. It does not relate to Odysseus; it's there to continue the story into the next puzzle.

The flow-rates out of each tank will be proportional to the cross-sectional area of each outflow pipe, so for the cold water tank the 1 sq in copper pipe will flow at one of one third, one quarter or one fifth of 60, depending on the gauge of the steel outflow pipe. Thus the copper pipe will flow at 20, 15 or 12 gal/min. The same applies to the hot water tank outflow.
Thus the inflow to the tank mixed directly from the hot and cold water tanks: must be one of 40, 35, 30, 27 or 24. We also know that the temperature of that tank is less than the average of the hot and cold water tanks, so the cold water flow rate is greater, so cold water inflow is 20 or 15, while hot water inflow is 15 or 12, so total inflow is one of 35, 32 or 27. We also know the outflow must be divisible by 3, since there are 3 1 sq in pipes, so the flow rates are 15 from the cold tank and 12 from the hot.
Using similar logic we can calculate the flow rates throughout the system and notice that the flow rates at the outlets all lie between 1 and 26.
If we substitute A=1, B=2 etc and arrange the letters in ascending order of temperature we get the word IRRIGATION.
