Two words or phrases are consonantcies of one another of they have the same consonants (any letters besides A, E, I, O, U, and Y) in the same order. For example, "minotaur", "mentor", and "amen, Trey" are all consonantcies of one another.
The items in the lists below are all consonantcies of related items. Can you figure them out?

I think one of the problems of these consonantcy lists is that the creator puts a lot of effort into coming up with a semi-clever word/phrase with the same consonant order, work that is fairly meaningless, since the first thing the solver does is strip the phrase of its vowels.
I think they work better as they exist in the Enigma, where the solver has to find both the original word/phrase AND its consonantcy. That way the creator gets double the credit for his cleverness. |

That is a good point, Kinbote; however, I think these are intended more as cute little quickies than the NPL flat equivalents would be. (All those freewheeling phrases -- "You were a ruby hippie", "I sat on a disc last May", "Sooty pueblo? avenge!" -- would be difficult to clue in a flat, and technically, the solver doesn't even have to figure out the original group in a group consonantcy flat in order to get credit for a solution. )

How often does someone figure out a group consonantcy without figuring out the original group, though? Almost never, I'd say.
But you're right, the original phrases for most of these could not be clued sufficiently. I just think that, if given a phrase with vowels, the first step is trivial, and the creator could just as easily given the following list and have the puzzle be exactly as hard:

You say that as though whimsical puzzles are a bad thing.  I, for one, am more of an advocate of fun whimsical puzzles than of hard ones. I get your drift, though.

I also agree that whimsical is often better, and they *are* more fun to make. A lot of that whimsy is lost on the solver, though, who will immediately strip the phrase of vowels like the hubcaps off a stolen convertible.
Anyway, carry on. I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I am of the belief that conversation about the essence of puzzles in general is a good thing to have. |
