OK. I'll get the obvious questions out of the way.

Was "he" a performer?
Were "they" an audience?
Was he lip-sync'ing and it was obvious, because he had been injured and everyone expected him to sound different?

Does it mean that he didn't sound different from other people's performances?
Is he a singer?
Is he a musician?
Is he supposed to be doing improv?

Was his performance perfect?
Was his performance flawed?
Is the different in the statement meant to mean a difference in the same performer, in other words he gave a performance earlier, and then a second performance later? or is the difference meant to be a comparison to a third party, in other words he didn't sound different than her?

If I may, series of building questions like these aren't particularly helpful. You should still be working on the generalities at this point as opposed to trying to jump at the solution.

Was he aware they were listening to him?
Was there anybody else able to hear him perform?
Was he performing in front of an audience (concert), or at a ball game, perhaps singing the National Anthem?
Were they specifically mad at him, specifically because of the lyrics, or was it specifically because of the music?

Was he performing his own work, or did it become appearant to them he was performing someone else's work?

Is knowing the type of artist he is important? Is knowing who they are important?

Is the title relevant? "Where have I heard that before" A little. It's just a small joke

Is he a rock musician? This
Is he a classical musician?
Is he a pop musician?
Is he a country or bluegrass musician?
Are "they" mad because they explicitly told him to sound different? Hmm...I don't know if they explicitly said "Sound Different". It's probably more implied.

Was he aware they were listening to him? Probably
Was there anybody else able to hear him perform? Yes
Was he performing in front of an audience (concert), or at a ball game, perhaps singing the National Anthem? No
Were they specifically mad at him, specifically because of the lyrics, or was it specifically because of the music? Mostly lyrics, partly music

Was he performing his own work, or did it become appearant to them he was performing someone else's work? Own work

Is knowing the type of artist he is important? Yes Is knowing who they are important? Yes

Some good questions this round.
