Is this entire scenario set in the present day? in real life?
Is there one specific instance of this sign? or is it something more abstract that you are talking about, that such signs exist?
Was the original intent of the sign something completely unrelated to the "he" under discussion?
You said that the sign is not as it was meant to be. Has the text been altered? Intentionally? Because of weather?

Is it a sign with movable letters, like a church sign?
If so, did someone rearrange the letters?

Both are commonly used english words. The origonal comes from the French. The change can be English, Spanish, French, Greek, or Russian, based on a few searches on wikipedia.

Was the original purpose of the sign to indicate a certain location? If so, is the location a proper name?
Have letters on the sign been removed? Or altered but not removed? Was just a single letter altered/removed?

Like, instead of saying whatever it was supposed to say, it was "typoed" (some sort of error was made) along the way, and it says something different. Like, instead of saying "No Parking" a sign said "No Barking"

Ah, so you're asking "Is the change in the sign a substution of one (or more) letters for other letter(s)? " And the anwser, is no

Sorry to drag that out, just have to be specific.

Was the sign accidentally seen through a mirror?
Or otherwise reversed?
Is it Christmastime?
Was the sign supposed to say Noel?

That's it! I could drag out some details, but that's the gist of it.

Spoiler :

A Noel sign is put up at christmas. This particular sign has the letters spelled out in individual pieces, i.e., not one block. When setting them up, he accidentally puts them facing towards his house, instead of away.
This would of course not spell anything, (Unless I worked a mirror into the story somewhere) but one jokester comes along and flips the individual letters so that now they spell Leon. And of course this begs the question : "Who's Leon?"

Thanks for playing everyone, hope that was worth the effort.
