I'd assumed it was the letter following the "direction" letter, but I can't quite make anything from the ones that seem most plausible.
That version (with all the answers the same length) looks like a stronger approach.

As this is the Quickies thread, I'll provide some direction here, though I think it's doable without it. Spoilered, in case you prefer not to look:

Two of the words in the grid are not the intended words. One will be obvious if you can discern the criteria I had for selecting the words. The other is not so obvious, but I won't hint at that until you've had a further look.

OK, let's move this along

SCABBARD - Sword sheath
ONCOLOGY - Study of cancer
FLEXIBLY - In a pliable way
OBSTACLE - Hindrance or disadvantage
BULLWHIP - Indy's accessory
LOCUTION - Aphorism
VIRTUOSI - Musical masters
MAGICIAN - Practicer of prestidigitation

Adding to the unsolved clues:
Hindrance or disadvantage; an undesirable feature or handicap
Aphorism; terse maxim

Reading diagonally down the answers so far we have

SNE-W-SN

I guess those are relevant, maybe?

I would also 'guess' that the answer might be backside but I don't know how to get to that from what we have so far...maybe the directions above will 'point' to the letters we require?

I thought the words were:
Code:
SCABBARD
ONCOLOGY
FLEXIBLY
DRAWBACK
BULLWHIP
APOTHEGM
VIRTUOSI
MAGICIAN

Taking the letter indicated by one move from successive directional letters (N-E-S-W) and reading down would give: COXALGIA which is apparently a pain in the hip area, but that isn't the password. (And it's not still a&e)

Thoughts on this one?

I came up with that word manually, and it was a bear to do. I wonder if it could have been done programmatically?

My goal was to use each of N, S, E, and W twice, and use them in the diagonals so they would be noticed. I bet there was a more common word, but I couldn't find one that worked.

Maybe I'll write a similar puzzle with U, D, L and R someday. I bet it's a lot easier to find words with only one of those letters in them.

It was a slick puzzle.

Initially I thought the words all contained either N or S together with one or more R or L, hence I was surprised when OBSTACLE proved incorrect. I'd also pegged PLIANTLY, not FLEXIBLY, and CONJUROR rather than MAGICIAN for the same reason.

This could go in minutes or days...

Evolution of a gardening tool

One astatine rubbish nipple: fun, danger.
First notice followed by area divided into strips (advanced)
I, at home, gain alcohol, string, pain!
Single mother (male) - hair, skin disease - run!
I, surrounded by crime, function - put a gloss on temple.
Myself (the self) - cover slipped, firm, impassive.
One engaged in sculpture, for example, deer-centre (centre of a room, perhaps).

LANCED should in fact be LOANED.

The letters added to the sixth words spell out HOGARTH.

William Hogarth is know for the paintings A Rake's Progress which match the title of the puzzle nicely. Not sure what the password is though, neither rake nor arakesprogress works.

It was more of an indication that I was lazy in my cryptic writing, and one the first two I wrote were that way, I just decided to do the same with the rest. But now that you've mentioned it, I can use that connection as an excuse for my shoddy cryptics.

Keeping this moving with a invisible hint, since it's likely a true spoiler:
Each word shares a commonality with the word that follows it.

I saw those, and had gone on one more step (I believe) to...
element symbols. The double letter combinations repeated across words are:
LI - Lithium (Atomic numbers are 3, 18, 20, 13, 2 -> CRTMB -> ???)
Ar - Argon
Ca - Calcium
Al - Aluminum
He - Helium

But that's as far as I got.

Yeah, I didn't notice that there are actually two different pairs of letters repeated between scarce and rascal. I used CA (Calcium is 20) and by chance the other pair is SC, for 21 (Scandium). So T should be U. What are the odds? interesting coincidence.

Given that I'm out of Top GLer, but the challenge was a non-text puzzle, I figured I'd create one. Almost everything I create is text based, so it was a nice change of pace. I hope this one isn't too sinister.
