ok, so I broke my leg the other day and now it turns out that I have time to do things that I didn't think I had time to do. Like a new cludoku puzzle.

Solve the clues; enter the clue answers into the grid; then solve like a regular word sudoku puzzle (including the long diagonals).

Every clue answer must be entered into the grid (each starting on a separate star square), in a straight line in any direction (including diagonally), one letter per square. The solution to the puzzle is a 9 letter word (comprising all of the letters in the completed cludoku puzzle) that does NOT appear anywhere in the completed grid in any direction.

Clues
Abrams' cross contamination. Glee character (5)
Bird let loose. Sea bird (4)
Line of poison ivy. Blood vessel (4)
Roughly swing up to. Cash register (4)
Say positive things about! Dance party (4)

Hint: The clues are all indirect anagrams (and probably not terribly good ones). I figured they'd be okay to use in this puzzle given the limited amount of letters available.

Answers to the cryptics:
Abram's cross contamination (5) Glee character
clue definition: Abram = ARTIE
wordplay definition: cross = IRATE
anagram indicator: contamination

Bird let loose (4) Sea bird
clue definition: bird = TERN
wordplay definition: let = RENT
anagram indicator: loose

Line of poison ivy (4) Blood vessel
clue definition: line = VEIN
wordplay definition: ivy = VINE
anagram indicator: poison
link word: of

Roughly swing up to (4) Cash register
clue definition: up to = TILL
wordplay definition: swing = LILT
anagram indicator: roughly

Say positive things about (4) Dance party
&lit clue definition: say positive things about = RAVE
wordplay definition: say positive things = AVER
anagram indicator: about

Only eight letters are provided by the five clues:
A,E,I,L,N,R,T,V
If it is meant that a ninth letter is to be added to these eight that
can form a nine letter word, there are three possible letters:
G - TRAVELING
S - INTERVALS, and
Y - VERNALITY

And now you know why indirect anagrams are not allowed. Even knowing that they are indirect anagrams, we couldn't solve them. Possibly a Glee fan might have gotten the first one, but certainly not I.

The problem is that an indirect anagram is only useful as confirmation when you already have the answer from the definition. There are just too many choices, otherwise, to try to think of them all and anagram them, too. And in your original clues, only the 'Abram' one could possibly be a strong enough definition to give one the word and only need confirmation.

Code:
V E R N A L I T *
I * A R V T N E L
N L T * I E R V A
R I L E * A T N V
E V * T N I L A R
T A N V L R * I E
* N I L E V A R T
A T E I R * V L N
L R V A T N E * I

Given any of the three possible letters, at least one of the of the previously identified anagrams would be found in the above solution. For G, TRAVELING would be in the reverse direction on the sixth row; for S, INTERVALS would be in the reverse direction in the ninth column; and, For Y, VERNALITY would appear in the first row. As the instructions state that the anagrammed word would not appear in the word sudoku puzzle, there must be a fourth possible word I am currently unaware of.
=================================
A solution would be to replace each asterisk with an S, as the word may very well be:
VENTRALIS - (ichthyology) a ventral fin
(I located the word in an unabridged dictionary.)

Good catch. Both AVIRULENT and VENTRALIS are words that are valid solutions for the given criteria. Another two less likely options are

the Esperanto adjective:
TRANKVILE - quietly; tranquily; calmly

and the open compound proper noun:
LOVE TRAIN - the title of an 1972 R&B hit single by The O'Jays [/b]

AVIRULENT is the intended answer but I guess the other is ok too since I didn't post SOWPODS as the reference.

As for the indirect anagrams, I used them to see if the restricted letter count (and I gave more than half the required letters) made a difference. Turns out it didn't. Live and learn.
