I know it's been a while, but I always come to the GL when I need to know things. And now I need to know things.
I'm currently having an eye issue that I like to refer to as the wonky eye. One of my pupils is quite a bit bigger than the other. It does contract some when exposed to light, but stops at a slightly larger size than it should be. I had it checked out at the college health center. They called an opthamologist who suggested giving it a couple of days without contacts and see what happens. They also said it might be caused by a neurotoxin present in some flea medications. Seems like a possibility since I do work at doggy daycare. They said if that were the case it should clear up in about 24 hours. They did some neurological tests and said my brain function seems fine, but if it continues I will probably get a CAT scan.
Well, it hasn't cleared up in the last 72 hours. It looked as if it were returning back to normal, only a slight variation in pupil size. Then last night I started looking wonky again.
I've done some net research and come up with nothing conclusive. There are some stats out there about 20% of the population having uneven pupils but it doesn't say much about whether it starts at birth or can develop later. Not too much about causes, etc.
Just wondering if anyone else has encountered similar eye issues or just happens to know some neuroscience.
They said that I shouldn't worry... it's probably not a tumor.
Here's the wonky eye, as poorly depicted by my MacBook camera in bad lighting. The size difference here was not at its worst.

wow, that is one seriously large pupil there. I wish i could help you, but my knowledge of eye conditions is limited to (and limited in) lazy eye. _________________ Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like? |

Maybe one eye isn't receiving light well and tries to get some more. But don't take my word for it. _________________ 1000oclock.com |

The wonkiness has moved from the right eye to the left. This seems to disprove the theory that I got something in my eye. They keep evening out for a bit and then getting wonky again. I attempted to call the opthamologist that consulted on my case, but the number I was given is disconnected. So I'll try to figure out how to procede tomorrow.
The wonky left eye:

| I looked at the medical book I have, couldn't find anything. I suspect the dialation is a flea med reaction, esp since the reported eye switch. |

My wife has had similar wonkiness, although I don't think hers ever lasted as long as 72 hours. I was worried enough that I called a good friend of mine who is an ophthalmologist and asked him about it. She (my wife) has also had occasional "shooting" pains in her eye.
My friend said that the two conditions were not related, both relatively common, and both benign and not typically treated. Carolyn also has a third condition in one eye called retinoschisis, which is also usually benign, but can lead to detached retina.
Anyway, I guess there are a lot of things that can happen with eyes, many of which are not serious. Hopefully, yours is one of those. |

Saw the opthamologist today. Results inconclusive.
He said my eyes look perfectly healthy, nothing phsyically wrong. He also seems to have ruled out flea meds. Something about gamma receptors.
He said it isn't likely to be common anisocoria as that rarely shows up suddenly and drastically. And it VERY rarely spontaneously switches eyes.
His recommendations:
Keep an eye on it
Don't use eye drops other than simple saline
No over the counter cold medicine
If I start getting headaches or dizziness, come back
My plan:
Keep an eye on it
Go to a neurologist if this continues as it has been |

I hope you get to the bottom of this, but honestly, I laughed pretty hard when I read that.
Are you sure this isn't something you're subconsciously doing to get even more guys to notice those beautiful eyes of yours? |

im not sure about the condition of lighting when you took the pictures, but (both) my pupils are about as large as your larger one on the pic. the size in itself is not alarming.
as to the difference in sizes, hmm... i have no clue. but the pupil is surely not too big.
yes, i have good vision in poor light conditions. |

I wasn't worried about the size itself, only the difference, though the larger of the pupils was larger than it normally would be in the lighting conditions. The opthamologist did confirm that the problem was one pupil being too big, not one being too small.
The good news is that the instances of uneven pupil size are decreasing. It happened to the left pupil again this morning but then went away for the rest of the day. Maybe I got something into my system that is just taking longer than anyone would have suspected to get out. If it's not back to normal by the weekend I plan to make an appointment with a neurologist. But maybe I was just a fluke and everything is ok. |

So if both were too big, you'd have twice the problem, but would have been fine with it. |

Yeah, the reason I thought it might have been caused by pesticide(s) is because similar weird things have happened to my eyes as a reaction to overexposure, in this case, pyrethrins and synthetic pyrethroids.
I didn't get wonky eye like a dialated pupil, but rather uncontrollable twitches that would sometimes last for several days off and on.
Sounds like it's getting better, that's good to hear. |

| Tell people that your expanded pupil can see the future. They'll give you money for lame advice. |

Me too. I have been in east Texas, without internet or cell phone for four days. I read the whole thread up to where I came across my own reply before I realized what had happened. |

Shoot. I wasn't taken aback, remember the thread very well when it was posted back in 2006.

Forgot to add that I posted as "travis" in this thread.
I will no longer be using that name, nor will I be making another post as "unregistered/guest". It is me, Buzzsaw, from here on out. |
