I was at the 2012 Toy Fair in New York City this week and there are a few companies that license the scrabble brand to make their own sets. Sometimes they are made of different materials or different sizes.

Anyway, I was playing around with one of the sets with the goal of fitting as many 15 letter words as possible. I managed to get CINEMATOGRAPHER in the first row, STRAIGHTFORWARD in the third row, and INTENTIONALLY in the second column.

My question is, what is the least number of words that will use all 100 tiles. This doesn't have to be from actual gameplay, meaning a letter does not need to be on the center square or a large word does not have to be built up from more than one turn. However, all the words have to be connected somehow. Just using the tiles, fill the board using the least number of words. Here the letter distribution.

2 blank tiles
E ×12, A ×9, I ×9, O ×8, N ×6, R ×6, T ×6, L ×4, S ×4, U ×4
D ×4, G ×3
B ×2, C ×2, M ×2, P ×2
F ×2, H ×2, V ×2, W ×2, Y ×2
K ×1
J ×1, X ×1
Q ×1, Z ×1

There might be a forum elsewhere that has dealt with this already, so if you know of one, let me know.

So this expands to
Code:

EEEEEEEEEE
EEAAAAAAAA
AIIIIIIIII
OOOOOOOONN
NNNNRRRRRR
TTTTTTLLLL
SSSSUUUUDD
DDGGGBBCCM
MPPFFHHVVW
WYYKJXQZ??

And I'd imagine the first strategy is to get rid of Q, Z, J and K as fast as possible.

Do the words have to be constructable in turns? eg CINEMATOGRAPHY can be formed cleverly by connecting both CINEMA and GRAPH that might be already in play on the board?

So go ahead and place Cinematography on that Triple Word Score (and cross off the letters)

Hypothetically, one might be able to achieve the goal of using every tile using only 8 words with 6 of the words being 15 letters in length..

Following is a layout of 12 words with the two blanks representing an E and S; yet only one of the 12 words is 15 letters in length. (It is also possible to achieve this layout within the rules of play of Scrabble with the first word being RIVING.):

Code:

MYXOBACTERIALES
.......H.......
ZOOGEOGRAPHY...
.......I.....P.
...REJUVENATION
.W.....I...A.W.
DIFFERENTIATED.
.C.....G...T.E.
.K.......B.O.R.
.E..ILLUMINOUS.
.D.......N.....
.N.......A.....
.EQUATES.L.....
.S.............
.SAVOURED......
