I thought that "snakes on a plane" might refer to shapes on a 2-D plane, so I replaced the numbers with something with a higher contrast. I couldn't see any discernible patterns or shapes though.

I thought then that the "snakes" might be replaced by words, but I'm not having much luck with this yet.

Yeah, me neither - and I tried different colors and then just black lines outlining the 'snakes' along the squares. Nothing.

Then I tried counting the squares in each chain, and the turns, also. Didn't see any patterns - the numbers don't go past 23, so I tried an alphabet substitution on the length (in squares counted) and turn count - but nothing that makes sense.

I think that Jack may be right - maybe we need to somehow put letters into the squares....

If I counted the letters in the note correctly, there are 122 of them. If I miscounted, then there are 121, which would make a nice 11x11 square.

Well, I seemed to do well with the last one, so I thought I'd take a crack at this one too.
I have a few ideas which could be on the right track, or out in left field.
I'm not sure which, yet.

I remember a game called snakes (it has many other names), where you had to eat the numbers in successive order while not biting your own tail. Even though this is not on a square grid, I think the mechanics would be the same. The snakes can only make 90 degree turns.

Furthermore, if you consider 2 snakes (since there are numbers 1-15 repeated) eating simultaneously while not biting each other, you would get a pattern. I haven't worked the pattern out yet.

I'm guessing that whatever squares are left "uneaten" after the snakes are finished will provide a clue as to the answer to the riddle.

Thoughts?

I got the answer:

After solving the Numberlink puzzle, you count the length of each snake and then change into a letter alphanumerically. Reading the letters in order from 1-15 gives the answer NEUROTOXIC VENOM.

AH! I was counting wrong - I was counting the number of squares to move from one to the other, not including both numbers in each pair....

it contains two of the same number connect each of the same number without crossing lines...will this work? like long snakes!

I thought I would unleash my "NEUROTOXIC VENOM" on all you puzzle enthusiasts who haven't solved this. It took me less than an hour to solve it. It took me longer than that to create the grid and color it.

Jack was right to connect the numbers in the grid to find the snakes. Associating the lengths with letters gives the solution!

AcidFast's idea about coloring the snakes presents a new challenge. It was routine to color them with only four colors, but can one use only three, without touching a snake of the same color?

We're currently at the second longest break (244 days) between new puzzles since the first was posted in 1996. The longest was 500 days, between the April 2008 and August 2009 puzzles.

In other news, just because we do have a few puzzles in the eaves, that does not mean we couldn't use more! Definitely consider submitting puzzles for the front page!
