...or other similar search facility.
you can always go to the traditional information banks like encyclopedia britannica, but sometimes the information is so poorly "indexable" that i dont think you would be able to do without google. here is one:
i am HKRD0600606.2M003, what mythical creature am i? |

| I did nothing more than google HKRD0600606.2M003 and all the nearly-identical results mention it. It seemed quite google-able to me. |

| Zag, I think you misunderstood the topic of the thread. These are puzzles that can be solved easily by Google or another search engine, but I believe the intention was how would you solve the puzzle WITHOUT those facilities. |

Yeah, sorry. Fortunately, I was not the one to post the answer.
I thought it was just a new page of that other thread, and I didn't really read.

I'm not ignoring this. I think it about it a lot.
I did happen to highlight the answer, so I know it (though I kind of wish I didn't know it), but I am trying to figure out how to get to the answer (though I'm certain having the answer will be too helpful to achieve the desired result.) _________________ The enemy's base is down. |

I gave up and googled it, but it wasn't very useful. _________________ The enemy's base is down. |

Well, I just cycled through all of the contents of ibuibi, found a yellow dragon with series HKRD0600606.2M003, so I now knoe that it is a dragon. Ha! No, I googled it.
Using something found only on the internet is kind of cheating.
"What is 1 cubic parsec in teaspoons?" would have been a better question, in my opinion. _________________ The one member below 18 |

that question you mentioned is IMHO readily solvable with a pen and paper. its just straight-forward unit conversion - and the exact values for those units could be found easily enough without google:
e.g.:
- i know parsec is an astronomy length unit, but can't think off the top of my head of its exact value in a standard unit (for me, anything in the metric system)
- so i go to an astronomy book and look for parsec definition
- i go to your standard cookbook to see how much is a teaspoon
- then i just do the simple math with pen and paper
my original question was based on the little mystery number that you can sometimes find on odd objects right below the text that reads "made in china". i found myself staring at it the other day, and i punched it into google just for the heck of it. but i seriously doubt, there is any way of guessing what that number code actually *is* without google. and even tho i *do know* its some sort of manufacturer code from a chinese company, i still have no idea how to continue the search - without google.
i suppose the chinese legal authorities would be able to give you the gps of the factory that made it within minutes, but i still think they would use a computer search - even if on a smaller and more precise scale compared to the overkill of going thru googling the whole web. |

in fact, i just went thru the tech bits for the unit question:
1 parsec = 3.262 light years (source: websters dictionary)
3.262 light year = 3.262 x (95x10^11) Km (source: off my shelf, ISBN 978-80-8042-431-4)
1 tsp = 5 ml (source: from my kitchen, tupperware dough rolling mat with various cooking units conversions)
309.89 x 10^11 Km = 309.89 x 10^14 m (source: metric system basic info)
5 ml = 5 x 10^-3 l (source: metric system basic info)
1 litre = 1 dm^3 (source: metric system basic info)
309.89x10^23 = 1 cubic parsec in cubic decimetres
5x10^-3 = 1 teaspoon in cubic decimetres
so 1 cubic parsec is 6197800000000000000000000000 teaspoons. |

Wrong math at this point
once you have 309.89 x 10^14 m you need to go to 309.89 x 10^15 dm (1 m = 10 dm)
And then cube that. which yield (3.0989 x 10 ^ 17) ^ 3 = 2.97593 x 10 ^ 52 cubic dm _________________ Jan 21st, 2008: The pillaging continues.

Going back to the original question (after googling it myself) it appear to simply be a code for a product on a specific site, and not even a standard code at that. I tried some variants which came up blank to see if it was part of a series or something but apparently not.
So my conclusion is that the answer to your question is "no, you couldn't find out what it was if you didn't already know." (Where googling probably counts as "you already knew".) _________________

dont see your reasoning...
- i KNEW what it was, because i picked up a little plastic dragon at home and stared at its belly - and there was the code! (it definitely is NOT just a code on some webpage, i am looking at it right here in real world, cast in plastic - so it must have some real-life practical use - at least in china - beyond the scope of that brazillian (of all things!) website.)
- LordKinbote, the second poster in this thread, did NOT know what it was, googled for it, and found out its a dragon.
so my original question - "what mythical creature...etc" - is solvable thru google whether you know what the code is or not. which was the point.
now, if i had asked, what do the individual parts of the code stand for - i.e. explain the code - then perhaps google itself wouldnt help. but again, it wouldnt help wether you know or dont.
so i really dont understand your "already knew" or "didnt already know" parts of the post, as they dont apply to the situation very much. |
