Sounds like the answer to a game of Clue to me. In this case, Mr. Boddy was killed in the Lounge by Mr. Green with the Rope.

Being the pure mathematician I am, I will just point out that this is an NP-complete problem; thus it is pointless to try to solve it. Razz

After a second look, this reminds me of the classic GL puzzle

My scribble sheet looks terrible, but here's what I came up with:
N=1, G=2, D=3, E=4, L=5, M=6, O=7, P=8, R=9, U=0
Nice first entry! Thanks for posting!

Well done Sentran.
I thought this might have been a good one to solve over a cuppa, but I rapidly ran out of logical steps that would narrow it down for me. I figured eventually I'd need to start guessing, but unfortunately that would have taken at least another 2 cups. Felicitous

i knew you'd get them all quickly

i was going to title it:

Dial 9 for Murder

for a unique solution

but I decided you didn't need the hint. Extreme Delectation

Wait, what?

A well-designed logic puzzle (or alphametic) should have exactly one solution, based on the information explicitly given. If you're aware that there is more than one solution, you don't publish the puzzle as is, or give a "hint" to the intended solution -- you add more explicit information to the puzzle.

I'm sure some other GLer can express what I'm trying to say more helpfully. . .

Don't mind mathgrant. Revenge most foul!

If you know there are exactly 4 unique solutions, post it as "Find the four unique solutions". Basically, it's good etiquette to ensure the solver knows when he/she has finished the puzzle.

Better yet, construct it such that one of the solutions spells a 10 letter word when read 1-2-3-etc.

Yeah, don't mind the guy who runs his own logic puzzle blog and who's been contacted by the Acquisitions Editors of Brain Games (which will hopefully result in my puzzles being published in said magazine in the future). Razz I appreciate that you and Quailman accepted my open invitation to take my sentiment and phrase it more constructively, though. I didn't know how to say it, but I knew it needed to be said. Felicitous

Please feel free to remain in the puzzle community, sixleggedspider! It took me a long time to become as incredibly amazing at constructing puzzles as I am now, and if you can ignore my extreme lack of tact, maybe you can find people on the GL who can help you become amazing, too! Felicitous

I appreciate your effort.
Speaking as another new member of the board, I tested and retested my first puzzle solution many times to make sure that I had only one answer. Even then, they found things I was not expecting. Luckily, I'd given enough detail that I could still be specific about the answer.

Sandwich rule: a constructive criticism in between two positives. You'll never seem pompous again.

I appreciate the humor. However, the middle sentence wasn't constructive, nor did it have much to do with the first and last sentence. My post, before I opted for brevity, did actually follow my own rule, but whatever...Grant and I are on good terms, and sixleggedspider is a stranger to us all. One can act differently with people they've talked to for a while than they do with strangers without being a hypocrite, especially if your first words are a first impression. Thanks for giving the opportunity to clarify, though.

Note to self: get more chestnut-posting newbies so the old timers can get the condescension out of their systems.
