I played 13 games of tic-tac-toe with Mr. Bobby before he disappeared. It was a special kind of game: we didn't take turns playing X's and O's; instead, we flipped a coin for each square. As a result, the boards could look pretty unorthodox!
In the first game, he got 5 three-in-a-rows and I only got two squares, on the left and right sides of the board.
In the second game, I beat him thoroughly by getting 4 three-in-a-rows. His squares were on the right and top-right of the board.
He came back in the third game. I only got one square, in the middle of the bottom.
Even though I played four squares and got the center square and the top right corner in the fourth game, he still got two three-in-a-rows.
In the fifth game, I played only one square and he got four three-in-a-rows.
In the sixth game, I got the bottom right and right side and two other squares, but he still managed to get two three-in-a-rows.
In the seventh game, I got the two bottom corners and two other squares, but he got two three-in-a-rows again!
The entire time we played I had an odd feeling that Mr. Bobby was trying to tell me something, but what was it? |

| Hmm I pretty sure I'm on the right track but I'm having trouble with the 6th one. Freely interpreting that one suggests that Bobby doesn't know where he is either. |

Well, one can quickly go as far as ... I'M LOST.
That's probably it, but it seems like there should be more to the puzzle.
In proper Grey Labyrinth tradition, I'm going to assume there's another layer to this for no particular reason and wildly deduce his exact location from insufficient data: He's in Cowden, Illinois.
Rationale: He has to be in the US because of the "13" hint. 13 games were mentioned but only 7 were needed, so 13 is of course a reference to the original 13 colonies. Mr Bobby spelled out "I'M LOST," in the grids, but also gave us additional information: the number of 3-in-a-row's he got each time. They were, in order, 5 0 6 2 4 2 2. The first two, 50, are another hint to imply the 50 states. The rest, 62422, are therefore the zip code where he is currently lost. _________________ jbv |

SPOILER SPACE, if it's worth while.
I'll just be free-associating here, maybe I'll hit on something.

Not much help, as we are only missing 6 grids, and that takes 8. I suppose he could be (LOTT)ERY WIN and took off to some tropical island nation, but that's not very grammatical.
So, following up on jbvntx's 13 colonies idea... They flipped a coin for each grid... Where do we have 108 coins? Google says Iceland. Some help you are Google!
State coins with I'M LOST in there? Or state name pattern beginning with each?
I(JK)LM(N)O(PQR)ST uses 7 of 12 consecutive letters of the alphabet... maybe we can anagram JKNPQR into something useful, like "JQK NPR". Mostly decent cards for a game of bridge or euchre.
Ok, one more try... Bobby is lost, are we Searching For Bobby Fisher. (Also in Illinois, as luck would have it.) |

Guys, big apology: that's all there is (supposed to be) to it. I made this puzzle for my students (the full answer is "I'MLOSTINR407" = I'm lost in room 407, with the other six clues) but I forgot to remove the 13 reference when I posted the puzzle in diminished form. And Mr. Bobby is the victim from Clue.
My goal in creating this was to see what sort of uniquenesses could be drawn from these simple 3x3 grids. |
