Question 1: Find the word START in the word search grid above, in a straight line of horizontally, vertically, or diagonally consecutive letters.

Question 2: Now find the word FINISH.

Question 3: Starting with START, find a chain of dictionary-certified English words, each five letters or more in length, where each word begins on the space where the previous word ended, and that ends with the word FINISH.

For example, in the grid below:

If the puzzle were to find a chain of words leading from BEGIN (backwards in the fifth row) to ENDING (upwards in the fifth column), then a valid path would be: BEGIN, NORTH, HUMID, DRIBBLE, EAGERLY, YOLKS, SCRAM, MAILMAN, NYMPH, HYDRATE, ENDING.

Oh, snap. Good idea, Zag; maybe I should have done that.

I also edited the topic title to make it a little more clear what kind of puzzle this is. Maybe the reason nobody's solved it yet is because no word-savvy GLers have visited this generically-titled thread. =O Also, I added an example to clarify the rules.

I had understood it, I tried, but I was stuck. I was impressed with the number of dead end trails, and I'm even impressed with the place I got stuck. (nemeses). When I was feeling stuck and then found that fines could instead be read as finesse, I was sure that I had gotten unstuck. When that didn't pan out, I got discouraged. Dispirited

So, the only thing I would suggest is that your especially tricky one should have been later in the puzzle, maybe two from the end, where I might also have had a chance to find it by working backwards.

One the other hand, there's really no reason, on GL especially, to coddle the dummies like me.

That is correct, Oscar. My favorite bits were SEMEN/NEMESES and BIASING. I figured BIASING would be well-hidden with XENOPHOBIA being so obvious. And obviously I, mathgrant, would never include SEMEN in a puzzle without good incentive, and NEMESES was that incentive. ASSES, however, is a complete coincidence. Wink

I was scared this puzzle would be too easy; glad it wasn't. XD And sorry, Zag. D=

Again, I'm impressed with how much you fit in there, with the numerous false trails. I'll be a little surprised if there really aren't any unintended answers, you have so much packed in there. Anyway, here's the solution I found:

looping - grey - yodel - lock - known - need - demo - onto - olives - ship - plumb - bionic - chez - zinc - cool - looping

Technically, you could do LOOP-POOL-LOOP-POOL. . . ad nauseum before ending on LOOPING, thus creating an alternate solution. That was unintended. *nudge*
