When I first saw this problem, it stated there were two answers. The ones given as answers were "strengths" and "screeched."

I'm not sure. It's not one of the 5 I know of, but then, I thought there was only 1 9-letter 1-syllable word, and that's obviously off...

So we're posting language chestnuts? Here's one.

What's the shortest five-syllable word in the English language?

1. How many words (in English) contain each letter exactly twice? (I can think of only one.)

2. Name two English words that sound the same but mean the opposite.

1. Do you mean all 26 letters twice, or do you mean for example, NOON, BOOB, TOOT, NENE?

there are lots of english words that sound the same but mean the opposite.

fast--quick moving, unmoving
strike--to hit, to miss in baseball
custom--specially made, usual

Or maybe he means actually different words, i.e. homophones...

Like raze-to tear down, and raise-to build up?

oh, and Sami, I guess that means Abstentious is a word. Scratch that five...

Raise and raze were what I had in mind for #2.

For #1, Quailman, I didn't mean all 26 letters twice, but I was thinking of longer words than 4 letters (the one I though of has 10).

This is a chestnut alert - but I feel safe posting on the same topic as the old "-dous" words. (*grin*) A priest was found making a list of the people he confessed - what is special about this list? (besides the fact he forgot me?)

Dennis, Nell, Edna, Leon, Nedra, Anita, Rolf, Nora, Alice, Carol, Leo, Jane, Reed, Dena, Dale, Basil, Rae, Penny, Lana, Dave, Denny, Lena, Ida, Bernadette, Ben, Ray, Lila, Nina, Jo, Ira, Mara, Sara, Mario, Jan, Ina, Lily, Arne, Bette, Dan, Reba, Diane, Lynn, Ed, Eva, Dana, Lynne, Pearl, Isabel, Ada, Ned, Dee, Rena, Joel, Lora, Cecila, Aron, Flora, Tina, Arden, Noel, and Ellen sinned.
